But one of the neighbours, Smilla from Greenland refuses to buy the police explanation and sets out on a quest to find the truth about her friend.
Because Smilla is from Greenland she knows all these things about snow that the police and most of the rest of us don't which pulls her into very dangerous situations.
You have to stay alert when reading this book otherwise you can't figure out what is going on.

Ive been a fan of Nordic Noir for several years, but somehow missed this one, Im glad I finally stumbled across it, The main character, Smila, is perhaps the most interesting character Ive read in a long time, More important than all other characteristics is the fact that she is a Greenlander living in Denmark.
Her situation frequently reminded me of the struggle of Native Americans living in white American culturethe same disadvantages, the same prejudices, the same tragic loss of self and place.
But Smila is not a victim, She is brilliant and driven, The publishers blurb says, “She thinks more highly of snow and ice than she does of love.
She lives in a world of numbers, science, and memoriesa dark, exotic stranger in a strange land.
” As a Greenlander, Smila possesses a variety of words for snow and ice, and at every turn she offers the precise word for it, the word that makes all the difference to human life in the exact situation.
There is nothing artificial about this element of her voice, Its innate and beautiful.
The novel is narrated in first person by Smila, and the narrative is driven by the death of a young friend and neighbor, Isaiah, who is also a Greenlander.
The death was ruled an accident, but Smila pursues the facts relentlessly until she begins to uncover a much bigger secret.
Hoegs writing is wonderful, poetic, descriptive, Heres the opening paragraph of the novel:
Its freezingan extraordinarydegrees Fahrenheitand its snowing, and in the
language that is no longer mine, the snow is qanikbig, almost weightless crystals
falling in clumps and covering the ground with a layer of pulverized white frost.
The language, the characters, the events are haunting in this novel, Smila is an engaging combination of strength and vulnerability, sometimes in complete control of events, sometimes hovering on the edge of disaster, but always she is the outsider working to use the system to reach her ends.
Smilas Sense of Snow is a novel I think Ill read again at some point in the future.
It was turned into a film in, so I may watch that too, I cant quite leave Smila behind, .
