nice children's book about the daughter of a witch, Broccolina is very ugly amp is completely preoccupied with becoming beautiful, One day as she stirs a cauldron for her mother, an angel flies over, Broccolina wishes to be as beautiful as the angel amp while she is trying to discover the secret, she is bothered by several of the animals around her homethe cat, a crow, a dog, a goat, a cow, amp a parrot.
She is mean amp hurts each of them in some way amp, with each injury, another ugly feature on her becomes uglier, Her hair is like straw, she has a beard amp horns, a hoarse voice amp cuts all over her along with a long tail, When she sees herself in the mirror, she is angry amp, when the angel passes over again, Broccolina blames her for everything, The angel explains the secret to beauty is kindness so Broccolina seeks out all the animals she's hurt amp speaks kindly to them amp heals their hurts, As she cares for them amp undoes all her cruelty, she becomes a beautiful angel amp flies happily to heaven, This is a good story to teach children that true beauty comes from within by showing kindness to everyone, Very nice. This story I found in the International digital library, It is a tale about an ugly witches daughter who desperately wanted to be pretty, She saw a beautiful angel and wanted to be as pretty as her, As she tried to mix up a potion to be beautiful, she was very mean and hurt all the animals who came close to her, Each time she hurt another, she became uglier, Angry at being so ugly, she blamed the beautiful angel, The angel taught her that in order for her to be beautiful, she needs to treat others nicely, This tale has a message for children to be kind to others because beauty starts from within, This is a great book for me to use in my classroom when children are bullying others or using unkind words, Hailing from Sri Lanka, "The Witch's Daughter" tells the tale of a meanspirited young witch who strives to be beautiful like the angel she sees flying over head.
In her quest to become beautiful, the young witch becomes impatient and abusive to animals around her, The book reinforces gender stereotypes and beauty standards of women, While the moral of the story emerges that true beauty comes from within, the focus of the book remains on achieving outward beauty as the ultimate goal, Girls don't need another example of this messaging nor do boys need to see this perpetuated, Not a fan. Broccolina is the daughter of a witch who is only interested in becoming beautiful, and ignores her calling to witchcraft, When she attempts to create a potion to make her beautiful, she is constantly disturbed by animals and responds with abuse, which makes her physically ugly, Then an angel comes and tells her to be kind to everyone and that will make her beautiful, She follows this advice and becomes as beautiful as the angel,
This book is not very good, The illustrations are unattractive and uninspiring, The heavyhanded moral lesson, that being kind makes you physically beautiful, and gets you to heaven, is one I would never want my kids to hear, The only redeeming theme is the implied idea that pursuing physical beauty for its own sake is a waste of timebut the The Witchs Daughter's conclusion works against it, Skip this one.
