Free A Space Girl From Earth (Kyroibi #1) Generated By Christina McMullen Provided As Digital
Whitmore is no ordinary girl, Even if her parents werent internationally famous celebrities, her six foot four inch height and oddly spotted complexion would make her stand out in any crowd.
But never would she have guessed she was an alien from far across the galaxy, Or that hidden within her genetic makeup lies the Kyroibi: an ancient and powerful relic housing the forbidden knowledge of her people,
Knowledge some would sacrifice everything to possess,
Worse, it isn't just the malevolent Emperor who wants the Kyroibi, Her own mother can't resist the draw of ultimate power and the one person Ellie might be able to trust is an unrepentant assassin who may be responsible for her lifes upheaval.
Now, she must travel to a distant planet and unlock the secrets to restoring peace and ending tyranny, But how can anyone expect her to save the galaxy when she cant even pass organic chemistry I read this delightful book as part of my reads for the second year of the SPSFC.
Self Published Science Fiction Competition
In fact, my team voted this one as a Toppick! I would never have guessed by looking at its cover that I would love it as much as I did, but that just goes to show the old addage of never judging a book by its cover is something to remember!
We first meet Ellie Whitmore as she cements another spectacular fail in Organic Chemistry.
I can relate! She receives a cryptic email from her mother, which she promptly discounts as melodrama, and proceeds to get up to her usual antics down the streets of New York.
She notices a strange man following her one that looks more like a toad than a man and when she tries to run, well now, that's when our story begins.
Ellie discovers that she is an alien that was hidden on Earth by her mother, I don't mean an alien as in someone from a foreign country I mean Ellie is an alien from a foreign galaxy, Not just any alien either, They say knowledge is power and this story illustrates that perfectly, Ellie finds out she is to be the master of the Kyroibi a relic of forbidden knowledge which can be wielded as a weapon, Guess who the first person is Ellie must fight in regards to the draw of the Kyroibi's power Her mother! Since that isn't enough for this young girl to deal with, let's throw in saving the galaxy and ending the current reign of tyranny while we're at it.
Christina McMullen drew me in with these beautifully written characters, While most of them were aliens, emotions are something shared by all species I think, therefore I found them relatable and endearing, There was even a touch of romance involved that I enjoyed and would have loved a little more of! I know, I was really surprised at this! The use of sci fi elements were interesting and explained to Ellie, and me by extension.
All the tech was new and foreign to her, so we learned together, In some cases it still went over both our heads, lol!
Now, there's not a whole lot of world building I do think that will come in the sequels but what filled this gap for me was the history of Ellie's father, his people and family.
I cannot wait to continue this series and see where the next book takes Ellie, and Julian snickers Space Girl is an interesting twist on SciFi adventures, Ellie, the main character tries hard to fit in, never knowing her own birth legacy until things get weird, With a modicum of romance, adventure, and parentalangst, it will appeal to most YA readers looking for fantasy and a little more, A Space Girl from Earth is a fun adventure from various places on Earth including Pripyat! to the far reaches of space, Its wellwritten and complex with an interesting foray of characters, filled with unexpected twists that make it hard to predict, Great for YA readers who like a space opera flair, quirky main characters, and a touch of family drama! This is a unique story and I enjoyed most parts of it, especially when Julian was around and the parts which reminded me of Star Trek.
But Ellie's family history and Space conflict explanations were a bit lengthy, Apart from the grandmother confusion which is intended because Ellie goes through this herself I could easily distinguish between the quite many characters, Which is a good thing because I often get lost in books in which there are many characters, Some of the names are quite long and full of Ys and apostrophs so I don't want to have to read them aloud, In all a solid and entertaining read, especially fit for young adults, I struggled a little with some of the earlier backstory scenes, But the book got better and better as I progressed, Great action sequences, strong characterization with a convincing, feisty heroine and some fun secondary characters, Also plenty of nice touches of humour, I'm looking forward to following the further adventures of Ellie! coming soon, I've had the pleasure of reading this book as an advance copy, It is no secret that I love all Ms McMullen's books, I am happy to say that this one is no different, I loved it too.
First, I have to talk about the cover, What an eye candy. I like that both print and eBook are different, and yet related, But now I have got to get my hands on a print,
Characters: I love Ellie, She's down to Earth pun intended, I always dreamed of being from another planet but now, after this, I guess I'll be happy to be who I am, Otherwise might mean too many responsibilities, Still, it was fun to try to put myself in her shoes, And aren't they pretty too
Now, while I loved Ellie, it's no secret that I tend to navigate toward male characters, In this story, it was Julian, It's hard to explain why I loved him even more than Ellie without giving spoilers, but I liked the mystery around him and how you learn more about it as the story advances.
I think he might very
well be my newest BBF book boy friend,
It's a great opening for a seriesI can't wait to read moreand a quick read that could be enjoyed by about anyone and not just science fiction lovers.
If you pay attention to me which isn't many of you you'll know how much I love Christina McMullen's work, expansive as it is, Nothing about that has changed with A Space Girl from Earth, I love the scifi genre, but generally find scifi books to be rather tedious and boring, Soooooo much exposition on races and histories and blah, blah, blah, Snoozefest. But then here comes Christina and she gives a big ol' middle finger to all that noise, Sure, there's all the necessary back story to give a reader any knowledge that they need to follow the story, but it's not bogged down with all the superfluous higledy pigledy.
The story is fastpaced, entertaining, and well written, Another slam dunk! Started out good it really grabbed my attention, I liked the plot but all the history and back stories really slowed it down, I just got bored. I loved this. Aliens and 'others'. To say too much about the story would be to spoil it for you, So I won't. I will just say that the complexity is fascinating and I would highly recommend it, Read it. You will be surprised A Space girl from Earth is a slam dunk! To start off I will admit I love all of Christinas past work and this book is no different.
This book a quick great read that kept me glued to my seat on my cruise, Thats right I read this book on vacation!
The only drawback is the other installments are not out yet,
But let me get serious, What really drew me to this book The cover, I first fell in love with the cover because as a woman of color its nice to see my skin tone portrayed in a positive manner.
The Girl on the cover: Ellie
Christina is wonderful at creating strong female characters who if need be can stand on their own two feet and Ellie is no different.
Ellie is a fully flushed out main character thrown into a world that should have been hers but is not her own, She navigates and deals with all the stress and trials with her new life,
This book also introduced me to my new book crush, Julian, . I love a mysterious man, Julian was a controlled but passionate character who drew me in once I met him, I must say I am a bit jealous that I cant meet him,
A space girl from Earth is great start to an amazing trilogy that is soon to comeand I cant wait!
This is a fastpaced, actionpacked entertaining read that bursts at the seams with ideas and a generous amount of wit.
The characters are memorable and likeable, making it an easy and funpacked read, This is book one of a trilogy, and I can't wait to read the next installment, If you enjoy YA scifi with a dash of tongue in cheek humor and a touch of romance, you'll enjoy this for sure,
Slick, humorous, and entertaining Maybe it is because I have been reading Scifi for so long, but I wasn't as impressed with this book as I wanted to be.
Maybe it is because I have to read using TexttoSpeech and I miss a lot in that process, I just couldn't get into this book, I didn't care for this girl raised by a super model, Yawn!
To find out that the daughter is from another planet and possibly a princess Still didn't care, I think the only thing I really felt her heart and soul was her feelings for the assassinbot, But even that didn't do much for me,
I did like the idea of being able to transport to other places and feel things through the strange 'freckles' but once again, I liked the ideas present, still not the characters.
Please, why do main characters have to be the most beautiful Most people aren't How do you expect regular people to like the character when they can't relate at all
I did appreciate the chance to read this.
Part of SPSFC So much for sleep, . .
On to book! Congrats to another semifinalist for SPSFC!
Sadly I couldn't connect with this one since it felt too young for my taste but the rest of my team loved it so I would still highly recommend it! There are all kinds of scifi: hard, soft, military, space opera.
. . I just know what I like, and this one falls into that category, There are aliens and advanced technology, which are cool and have just enough explanation to make them interesting without sounding like a textbook, There's a bit of romance which is usually not my thing, but I don't mind it one bit, as it adds to the story rather than eclipsing it.
This book is a strong beginning to what looks to be an epic story, and I'm looking forward to the next two books, .
