i sensazionali 'East Lynne', di Mrs Henry Woode 'Lady Audler's Secret' di Mary Elizabeth Braddon, nell'ultimo decennio del secolo si affollano, a quanto scopro, almeno tre romanzi 'The Marriage of Elinor' di Mrs Oliphant del, Nor Wife Nor Maid' di The Duchess, 'A Choice of Evils' di Mrs Alexander del, per citare solo i primi che mi vengono in mente che contestano, sotto traccia, il dogma dell'indissolubilità del matrimonio: che fare, ad esempio, quando il/la coniuge, creduti morti, arrivano improvvisamente a guastare un nuovo, felice connubio
Questo romanzo di The Duchess Mary Wolfe Hungerford pone la questione nei termini più appassionati, mettendo a nudo in modo forse eccessivamente patetico lo stato d'animo dei due protagonisti, e lasciando trapelare senza filtri la ribellione dell'eroina, che pur nata in una famiglia di parroci, vescovi e arcidiaconi vorrebbe sottrarsi alle convenzioni religiose sul cui altare si trova costretta a sacrificare la propria vita e il proprio amore.
Una lettura che consiglierei alle moderne scrittrici di 'historical
romance', perché si facciano un po' un'idea del carattere e della libertà di movimento delle autentiche eroine vittoriane: evidente soprattutto nella briosa descrizione della sorella minore della protagonista, che gira per i boschi intorno alla casa, libera di farsi corteggiare dal suo deliziosamente goffo spasimante, senza nemmeno l'ombra di uno chaperon.
