Get Am I Doing This Right? : Life Lessons From The Encyclopedia Bri-Tanya Depicted By Tanya Hennessy Issued As Version
honestly didn't really know what I was getting into this I don't really follow Tanya Hennessy, I don't listen to radio and I haven't watched her youtube videos.
But this was actually, genuinely, delightful, I had so much fun reading this, Like this book spoke to me on so many levels, It was laugh out loud funny at time, and so relatable, I felt like Hennessy was writing about my life, The feelings of being in a long term relationship, having a tense relationship with your body, being nearlyand reflecting on your younger self, imposter syndrome, loving to eat junk food so much of it spoke to my life's experiences.
And Hennessy herself has an easy, conversational style of writing, a genuine, Australian humour that gently pokes fun at herself without being upsettingly self deprecating,
I didn't know what to expect with this book, but wow, what a massively pleasant surprise! This is an example of the kind of memoir I strongly dislike, full of shallow anecdotes and listicles and very little vulnerability.
The fault lies partly in its gimmicky formeach of the chapters is ostensibly centred around a letter of the alphabet, much or really nothing like an encyclopedia, The chapter on online bullying quite interesting and real is overshadowed by filler content like the chapter called 'Um' which meanders into a meaningless discussion of Tanya's alleged desire to meditate.
I think Tanya is an interesting, funny, and talented woman and I would have much preferred a traditional memoir with real reflection, This was not it. Hilarious and relatable An honest, hilarious, and incredibly relatable AZ guide to adulting from one of Australia's most loved entertainers and radio presenters,
'Honest and articulate and beautifully written, ' Rosie Waterland
'Tanya Hennessy is a fabulous crazy cat! A true originalrelatable, hilarious, and disarmingly frank, ' Larry Emdur
'Tanya is unique, raw, creative and real, She's funny and quick as lightning, A star on the rise, ' Jules Lund
'Tanya Hennessy is obviously a very funny woman, but she also possesses something that's becoming increasingly rare: she's interesting, ' Chrissie Swan
Tanya Hennessy can't tell the time on an analogue clock, was once employed as a stiltwalker and still sleeps with Morris, her childhood teddy bear, so naturally, she is the most qualified person to write a guidebook for growing up.
AM I DOING THIS RIGHT is an encyclopedia of life lessons that Tanya has learned so that you don't have to, From A is for Awkward, to B is for Bodies, right through to V is for Viral and Z is for, well, ZZZZ, Tanya has compiled an entire alphabet full of hilarious, horrible, humbling and happy experiences that will make you laugh, cry and ultimately leave you feeling less alone in this complicated world.
Yaaaaaas Tanya. I love you even more after reading this, Super relatable for me done in a very humorous way, A light and quick read that just makes you feel better about life, There are definitely some serious elements surrounding anxiety, depression, body image, and bullying and they're handled in a graceful and honest way that works beautifully with the tone of the book.
Highly recommend. I really enjoy Tanya's videos, I had a friend get me onto them, and I genuinely laugh so hard at many of them, So I was excited to read this book, and even more excited when Tanya announced that she would be releasing an audio version, I knew I wanted to get this book that way, And I am glad I did, I think hearing this book in Tanya's voice made it much more special, You could feel her emotions as she read the words, This book had many moments where I laughed and it often left me grinning like a fool, It seemed to fly by and took no time at all to finish, I would definitely recommend to fans of Tanya, If you love her, then you'll love hearing these stories by her, If you're new to Tanya, then I recommend watching some of her videos online and if you like her and her humour, then give this book a go! Absolutely loved it.
Read it insittings and thats only because Im a mom of Littles and had to get up the next morning, I have followed Tanya for awhile now and even though I dont know her I feel like she is one of my best friends, This is a must read!!! :
Tanya Hennessy is a well known Australian radio presenter, comedian, influencer, day drinker, and bargain hunter, In this book she recounts stories and lessons she has learnt in her life her darkest and highest moments and her love for job,
This is probably what Id call a lose selfhelp book I may have made that up it reaches important life lessons whilst also being a hilarious look into someone whos just as awkward and chaotic as I am.
This is the second or third time Ive read this book, and I love it each time! If you want a lighthearted read with some series moments, this is it.
Also, Tanya is my spirit animal,
PS: there would have been more variety of lollies in this picture to add colour, but I ate all the MampMs on the way home, If youre after a raw, real, honest and hilarious book, then I cannot recommend this enough,
I became a fan of Tanya when she was on breakfast radio in Canberra, While I didnt listen to much radio, I did quite enjoy having her on in the morning as she was the most real person Id come across in a while.
Her AZ recount of funny, sad and hard times is so well written and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it, While there were some stories Id already heard from her time on radio, it was interesting to read about her life up until now, Its honest, embarrassing and funny everything that real life is, Highly recommend! This book made me lol so much, Gosh Tanya is hilarious. I did love the funny and also loved when she went deeper and talked about struggles from the past, Its not good she went through them but she did and she can give hope now to people struggling with the same things, Thank you Tanya for putting the good and bad in your book, I think your amazing and an inspiration,
This book is absolutely amazing and truly funny, A must read for everyone, I first came across Tanya on Facebook during one of her videos "Things people to say to hair dresses" and found her video so on point that I trawled Facebook then Youtube until I found her videos and indulged in them one after the other.
When I found out that Tanya herself had trained to be a Drama teacher I was a full blown fan girl,
When I saw on her stories that she would be releasing a book, the count down was on and I even jumped on to Booktopia and grabbed myself a signed copy my first ever signed book!.
When the book arrived I patiently waiting until Saturday so I could bask in the winter sun and devour it, Needless to say it only lasted a day, it's been years since I actually sat and read all day, I was utterly hooked by Tanya's anecdotes and found myself drawing parallels to my own life, especially the stories of her as a child charging her family and neighbors to watch her show.
I think the most memorable line for me was at the beginning of the book when reflecting on her own journey Tanya states "It's strange how I tried to be an actor for so long, then realized the most successful role I would ever play was myself".
I'm myself every day and in what I do and truly love it, this line echos so many truths and think it would be a good one to pull out when students are choosing their careers, pick a job that lets you be yourself.
Read this in one sitting and loved it, Made me laugh out loud as well as really consider all angles of Tanyas comedy the root of the selfdeprecating jokes she sometimes makes, Perfectly balanced with humour, I hope that she finds the selflove she deserves as she clearly makes so many people happy! Nailed it!! Oh Tanya, yes you are doing it right.
I honestly dont know what to write about this book other than thank you, I picked the book up as just something I could flick through on the plane on my way to a funeral, I thought well I've seen her videos shes funny it might make me forget the sadness I'm flying towards for an hour or two and I had to force myself to put it down.
. . either that or watch my bag go around the conveyor belt again,
The writing was as if Tanya is simply there next to you telling you these incredible bits of her life, her struggles and triumphs, I was engrossed in every word.
When she writes about the hard times I just wanted her to actually be next to me so I could hug her and let her know I've been there, when it gets to how she has overcome the obstacles I wanted to scream YASSS QUEEN! For the first time in my life.
So Tanya I say to you, continue to be lazy in your same four shirts on rotation or is it five now, fake tan away so you can be a better person and listen to that little whisper that tells you to keep going.
YOU ARE DOING IT RIGHT!
This book will have pride of place on my bookshelves and everytime I think it's all getting a bit much for me, I'll go back to it and see that if you have managed to overcome your obstacles, maybe I can overcome mine as well.
