found it to be quite underwhelming, A young woman takes on a job doing legal work for a grumpy patriarch living in a large mansion on a small Caribbean Island.
It isn't long before she starts to uncover secrets and danger,
This gothic romance opens in fine fashion, with the characters all bundled in a storm cellar while a hurricane rages above them.
A nice change and well written, Then, the rest of the book was kind of mundane and predictable, and follows the standard formula.
But the climax is a good mixture of tension and some unexpected violence until, at the height of the action, the author decides to go with my least favourite plot closure device of stopping everything abruptly and have the heroine suddenly "wake up rescued".
Which really annoyed me in this book because the final few chapters are very good, I guess I have read worse, This is one of the ones that is less “Gothic” and more just retro “romantic suspense” that being said it had a fun Caribbean setting/summer reads vibe but the mystery was a little lackluster/predictable.
This one is probably better for those new to the genre or even YA audiences who dig retro vibes.
I absolutely love gothic romances with all of the mystery and the strong female characters, Iona Charles is an amazing author incorporating an unforgettable story with amazing characters, .
