in the rough
I was randomly browsing the kindle store and stumbled on this one.
The cover and name alone drew me in, The author was completely new to me, I went in totally blind and was hooked, Off to read book! Well freaking done, Merry Ravenell!
I loved this book, The author has a gothic tone to her writing that works perfectly with the main character's struggle to comprehend the dark nature of her mate.
His character is revealed as unapologetically but not mindlessly murderous, He lives by a fairly simple code which includes brutality to those weak enough to lie or act traitorously.
Our mc also has a firm life code that comes from her Oracle training, We see, in her growing understanding of his life rules a corresponding growth of self, The author is gifted in character development and her unique writing style for this genre is something to not be missed.
Comfort reread that Ive loved since I first read it on wattpad many years back, strangely brings me back to my childhood definitely read it too young, but good find young me.
Im swept away by the characters, setting and intrigue every time and I love following my girl Gianna around.
Morally grey, questionable and just in general pretty grim yes, I love them all and seeing their interactions as they navigate the mess theyre in.
Its appealing and so so entertaining, The world theyre in is deeply flawed praying for all the women there, their Goddess is fucking scary and honestly a sadist, and Gabel is a cruel psychotic maniac who I wouldnt touch him with a ten foot pole in real lifebut you know what Its fun.
Merry has me rooting for their unhealthy romance itstoxic, dont expect anything else theyre both crazy, I almost want to say we are reading from the villains POV as in Ironmoon, not Gianna but there arent really any heroes in the story.
Yet somehow, I still want the masochistic conqueror whos just destroying these random peoples lives to win over the other corrupt leaders minding their businesslike at least he has honour, guys.
Just pretend he didnt just torture that guy, . . hell totally make a great, stable king, Gianna is just sitting in the corner wondering how the hell she ended up here, and Im thinking the same thing as we switch from smut to an explicit torture scene in a matter of pages.
She is firm throughout with her morals and beliefs, but also willing to see past her own small world view and how they fit into her new wider one.
We see her mature and be forced to grow up in very short amount of time, She is a very strong and resilient person, So much so she downright refuses to be a victim, She puts herself and her dignity first always, I love that. Plus shes smart. And Hix I dont care what he did in the past or whoever hes stabbing right now that man is an angel.
The characters all have sympathetic qualities that, although you might not agree with then, lets you understand and like them.
I dont even mind the tropes or cliches in it as theyre not done in an annoying way e.
g. Gardenia being the classic bimbo competition, However, I will admit I might be blind to any faults in this book as I am so attached to it, but I dont care, Im just here for the ride.
This remains my favourite of the books in the series,
I read a lot of Merrys other books drafts on wattpad and always thrived on the drama and enjoyed her writing style/ pacing.
Anywayif its not messy I dont want it,
Hix and Ana ltThere were things that I liked a lot in this book and there were things that I thought were really silly and awful.
I really liked the wolf fights and the world buildings, Ravenell did a great job with those, the history and space of the place she created was really great.
Loved the nightmare wolf that Gabel was, that was awesome, Trips to the tides, amazing, That was all top notch,
The romance in this was awful, To be honest, all the romance could have been cut from this and I would have been ok with that because it added nothing at all to the story.
Also the author could use a editor, This book was riddled with typos and errors, Really, really obvious ones.
Still, I want to know how this whole thing turns out with the clans so I'll likely read the next book.
I was expecting a toxic enemies to lovers book, and I was given just that, This was a fair read, I have to know. Does this series end in a HEA I feel nervous about investing more time if it doesnt I have to be honest,i stumbled across this one by accident a while back.
Having read the first bit,it sounded interesting enough to buy,
After all,it was on sale for only,,
Gianna is the Oracle of her pack,Shadowless,
When the Alpha of IronMoon,Gabel, demands their surrender, her pack doesnt fight him,
Instead, they round up their women for him to choose from,
Gianna is the “lucky” girl, and before she knows it,hes marked her against her will,
It goes downhill from there very fast,
She hates him,but he keeps pushing,
And instead of festering, the marks heal, and a bond is forming,
His demand they sleep in the same bed, makes it hard to keep a distance,
She doesnt want this bond to grow stronger, but fighting it gets harder and harder,
The visions she has are confusing,or show betrayal, and she struggles with their meaning,
As Gabel sees more of Gianna,he likes the idea of pushing her a little more.
If only there werent forces working against them, trying to seperate them,
But he isnt Alpha for nothing,he wíll show them what happens to those that defy him.
This was the first part of a series,
A story of shifters that is raw and gritty,as such a story should be,
Dont expect flowers and roses,or any kind of romance,
These shifters are primal forces, and arent afraid to shed blood when necessary,
Gabel isnt a kind Alpha, hes rough and mean, but once you get to know him,he grows on you.
Gianna is a strong woman,as an Oracle should be,
One that doesnt take kindly to being pushed,or humiliated,
There ís very little actual steam,if thats what youre looking for,
They do tease and touch, but thats about it, .
Not any details,if you know what i mean
With all that being said, this is a good story in its core.
A little long perhaps, . i meanparts
Im going to think about partandfor a while
The writing wasn't for me.
Honestly, I didn't get very far, I love this cover though, So bad, it makes me cringe,
This book was disappointing, It started off cliche but interesting, But at some points it became extremely boring,
Characters were horrible and lacked depth and a personality: Gabel is disgusting and narcissistic Becoming the Alpha King, he's everything I loathe in a guy.
And Gianna annoys the hell out of me and is quite weak,
As for the writing style, it was bad, This story lacks description and the speeches between the characters didn't help the story at all,
Also, any man acting with me like Gabel will lose his capacity to reproduce, I don't get authors writing things like this guys being jerks to girls but I am sure I hate their books.
This one was badly written, and I don't see why it's so popular,
So no, I didn't finish this book, and I don't regret it.
If there is one thing I regret, it's having wasted my time on such a bad book, "What happens to traitors in IronMoon" I asked him,
Gabel smiled.
the ship is good, they have chemistry and some great scenes, but other than that I don't have nice things to say about this book.
Maybe if you enjoy fantasy that includes werewolves, grumpy girl and enemies to lovers it will be interesting but for me it wasn't, it took me almost a month to finish this.
Reading this book was like reading The Wheel of Time series in one sitting, I really wish that we could give half on Goodreads as that's perfect for this book, It'snot quite four but it isn't three either, It's just in between.
What I liked about this book:
I really liked the characters and how they were all well formed.
I also really liked how the main realtionship developed and how they slowly realised that they did care for each other.
I also quite liked the world building and how this werewolf world has Oracles in it, There are still a few things that need to be cleared up but what we had was pretty solid.
The ending was also very good, It off a few questions unanswered but you could just leave the book here as in not read the next one only on Wattpad and still be sastified.
What I didn't like:
The pacing, There was quite a few chapters were nothing of importance was really happening and everything got a little boring.
Also even though the main ship does properly get together and sorts out their problems there is still a slightly unhealthy tinge to it.
And there was a lot of sexism coming from one of the characters, That pissed me off. What can I say, I read bookandin November last year, but for the life of me I cant remember much anymore about the story.
It was an ok read, but not spectacular and a bit jumbled, especially at the end, It got a bit chaotic,
Bookis till today not available online, At least i cant find it on any platform,
Therefore I am not rating it lol It took me quite a while to read this book, it's quite big.
The concept of this world is a very interesting one, with the oracles, the marks, packs, mating rules and scents, and I like Merry's writing style.
She did her job in making me want to find out what happens next,
That said, it is obvious that this book was written chapter by chapter on Wattpad, The romantic fighting did drag and could have been reworked a bit to run smoother, And I feel that the length of time spent on the romance drowned out the plot that always seemed to be on the periphery.
I wish that an inline editor and developmental editor could have had their hands on this book to really polish it up to its potential.
Yesmen and fans aren't going to give you an honest opinion for the most part, You need someone objective.
With this length of book, either it needed to be trimmed or made into two books.
Spoiler
I would have had the beta be a bigger villain and bookend the first book.
Secondly, the ending seemed abrupt, I know it's the first of a series, but there needs to be a better tying of some loose ends.
I personally got to the end hoping for something more, at least a sneak peek to book two in the series.
Thirdly, though there was some gore, . . I feel fights ended too quickly, Or were anticlimactic. Like when she asked him not to torture the guy, Ugh.
Lastly, I felt weird about the slut shaming done with one of the characters, It made me like the MC less, It felt over the top and unnecessary,
All in all, I like Merry Ravenell's book, It stuck with me and I will still buy the rest of the series, .
