book starts with a threesome and an artist named Beatrice looking for the sense of life, On premiere night of an exhibition of hers a mysterious stranger appears, She's in love at first glance, Who is he After some rather philosophical scenes we soon find out, Well, the book has some weird sex scenes and reference to the supernatural but overall I've read better and more compelling books of Sam West, It wasn't too long a tale but overall it left a shallow aftertaste, All characters were a bit too stereotypical here, It was okay. Nothing too
extraordinary for me, Looking forward to other books from this author! Cant get enough!
Ive been devouring all of Sam West books, I think she is brilliant! The typos and sometimes wrong names and words used do kind of get to me sometimes, Beatrice Langleys character narrates her firsthand experience with debauchery and nihilism in this novella by Sam West, The narrative follows a loose plot that kept me wondering if there was an overall theme of the story, but the elements within each scene seemed to revolve around the psychological aspects of Beatrices character.
West alludes to quite a few interesting concepts in “Strange Flesh”, for example the incubi myth and how that correlates with the main characters psychotic break, There are aspects of various social disorders either symbolized or outwardly referenced throughout the novella, like depression, disassociation, bipolar and OCD to name a few, The idea of Beatrices flesh becoming physically numb was a gimmick that I think went underappreciated, In terms of shock and awe, “Strange Flesh” does deliver some strange scenarios involving flesh in pretty erotic as well as downright ugly displays of gratuitous acts of depravity,

A Good Read! Easy read with detailed buildup
Easy to read with an extensive buildup about how a hunter captures its prey, The question then becomes who is actually the hunter This book has a scene with keys that I think might forever haunt me, I enjoyed the build up of the feeling of experiencing first hand the life of the glam and beautiful, Artists and models and nightclubs and drugs, etc, . .
The feeling of sleeping and waking like someone or something is sitting on my chest hits very close to home for me, The way Sam West weaves a illusional character into a the main character's life is exciting to say the least
If you like reading sexy stuff with a hint of gore, then this book is for you What did I just read Just didn't do it for me! Full review available at reelhorrorshow.

One evening, Beatrice Langley meets an enigmatic, and anonymous figure, to whom she finds herself mysteriously compelled, Something about the stranger calls to her, making her feel giddy, like a schoolgirl experiencing her first crush, something she thought she had long surpassed, Or, possibly, suppressed. For on the inside, she is hollow, Despite her hedonistic lifestyle of sex, drugs and alcohol, Beatrice finds that nothing seems to give her any sensation, be it pleasure or pain, Except for one thing the memory of the stranger, His proximity, enough to send a tingle chasing through her system as if he had infected her, And whos to say he hasnt For he appears in her dreams too, where even the ghost of his breath brings her more feeling than any other vice she has been chasing.
There are many extreme titles and authors, who just throw in one grossout setpiece after another, with no thought of plot, or even, sometimes, decent grammar or punctuation.
Luckily, that wasnt the case here, Sams writing was intelligent and thought out, the story as engrossing as it was disturbing, Moments of sex and violence, or even sexualised violence, arent just thrown in for the sake of it, They are part of the story, everything finding its place naturally within the narrative, even if there are moments that some readers are going to be possibly disturbed by,
Its not just the nasty moments that stand out, As well as Sams skill with words when dealing with the, lets say, less attractive moments, she squeezes some genuine creepiness into the story as well, Theres a moment where dream and reality are becoming blurred for Beatrice, and she is pursued by one of her artistic creations, The mood and tone of that scene worked well in conveying an unsettling atmosphere without the use of gratuitousness,
Strange Flesh is a great story, and although it wont appeal to everyone due to its extreme nature, I thoroughly enjoyed it, It was so nice to read something that trod the dark path, without sacrificing story for cheap shocks and I found myself invested in whether Beatrice would give in to the emptiness inside her, and forfeit her soul in exchange for pleasure, or if she would discover her humanity and save herself.
If youre looking for something that delivers extreme moments as well as a thoughtful and intelligent story, Strange Flesh gets my recommendation, Sam West is a British, extreme horror author with than forty books to her name, If you like your fiction dark, gritty, gory, perverse and truly terrifying, then youre in the right place, Sam West is a British, extreme horror author with than forty books to her name, If you like your fiction dark, gritty, gory, perverse and truly terrifying, then you're in the right place, sitelink.
