Tons of suspense and action makes this a fast read, This is my first book By Deaver, but definitely not my last,
This is an ARC release date isMay
I absolutely loved this book, It did take me a few chapters to get into it but once I did I was hooked, Jeffrey Deaver has a way of pulling you right into the middle of his stories, This was an intense thrill ride of a novel that left me wanting more, Mr. Deavers powerful imagery of a cult and its leader will leave a lasting impression, I highly recommend this high intensity novel,.stars
The book started with a bang and pulled me right in, Like the first book, The Never Game, it starts in the middle of a tense and exciting scene, After playing out the scene, Deaver then backtracks and brings you up to date,
The book was fastpaced for about the first third to half of the story and then slows down for a bit once Colter has penetrated the possible cult.
Then we get too much exposition, for my taste anyway, some introspection, and getting in touch with one's emotions, Then the pace picks up again, slows down again towards the end, and then one last bang Literally, I mostly liked it. That middle part was a little slow for me, It's kind of funny really that I didn't like the introverted part more since I'm such an introvert, Ah well. Also, I have some baggage where that particular setting is concerned so that may have affected things, In fact, Deaver did an excellent with is portrayal and managed to be fair in his depiction, Deaver pulls several twists during the story, most of which I really didn't see coming,
I do like Colter Shaw, and his many, many talents, including his habit of quantifying actions and events as risk percentages.
He is, by upbringing and by choice, an outdoorsman, with all the skills that entails, He doesn't like being confined, not even to a schedule, I also like the way he makes his living it's unusual in books, No idea about real life, But the work suits him, and it's fascinating to see Colter work and try to follow or anticipate his thinking, I usually fail. :D He's smart, clever, and always several steps ahead, He's compassionate, which lands him in trouble a few times he's kind, but not a soft touch he's stubborn and persistent and he prefers action to just sitting around.
"The Goodbye Man" was solid entertainment, It did have slow parts but it was overall exciting and engrossing, I'm looking forward to book three, assuming there will be one, Colter Shaw is on the hunt to find two boys for a huge reward, However, when he finally find the two boys, one of them jumps off the cliff, This shocking suicide stunned Colter Shaw, He decides to investigate this suicide, His investigation leads him to an organization, called The Osiris Foundation, Soon he finds himself knee deep in a cult,
My thoughts:
This was an enjoyable thriller! Colter Shaw was such an interesting character, He seems to be a rough and tough guy but is actually good at heart and cares about others, However, I personally don't like cult books, As this entire plot is about the cult or the Foundation, I wasn't able to get invested in the story, It's just a personal taste and I'm sure you might enjoy this book more than me, Also, I thought this book was quite slow paced,
Overall I enjoyed this thriller but wasn't a favorite, It was a good thriller with a good plot and some action, The ending of the book is quite great too, I will definitely pick the next book up, I'd definitely recommend this book!! This is the second book in the Colter Shaw series by author Jeffery Deaver and I enjoyed it so much more than
the first book.
I enjoy the character Colter Shaw but the plot in the first book was not to my liking but this one was significantly better.
Colter Shaw is in pursuit of two young men accused of terrible hate crimes when he stumbles upon a clue to another mystery.
In an effort to save the life of a young woman he travels to the wilderness of Washington State to investigate a mysterious organisation.
He has to decide whether it is a community that consoles the bereaved or a dangerous cult under the sway of a captivating leader.
It all promises to be a dangerous job for Colter Shaw and as he peels back the layers of truth he discovers that some people will stop at nothing to keep their secrets hidden.
Exiting plot, great characters and written by Jeffery Deaver, how can it fail to be a success,
I would like to thank both Netgalley and Harper Collins for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
This book was hard to break from yesterday, but other duties called, It has such a compelling story it is probably better enjoyed in one sitting as there are many pieces to the puzzles that make up Colter Shaw's life and actions.
He is the sort of strong male character that sometimes seems hard to believe, but it's rather entertaining to go along for the ride.
So far he has proven to be indestructible and we can only hope he continues winning, The physical feats, survivalist skills and general smarts make for quite the appealing package,
This outing starts simply enough investigating what may have happened to a young man but it leads to a cult that is more than dangerous.
This is a very good action filled novel,
Purchased Kindle I've read the first in this series, The Never Game, and unfortunately wasnt a huge fan, However, I had already received this second book from HarperCollins via Netgalley thanks!, so I decided to give Deaver another go, And Well
Deavers style of writing is sostilted and almostlist like, might be the correct description, "Shaw entered the shop. On the shelves there were three different types of chips salt and vinegar, chicken, and tomato flavoured, Hed need a drink to go with the chips, their sodium levels were high, He walked to the back of the shop where an array of fridges and freezers sat, working overtime due to the heat.
Not that the rising mercury worried Shaw, His life off the grid meant no reliance on air conditioning, He was quite comfortable in his dark blue jeans, khaki shirt and hiking boots, He opened the fridge. There were sodas, bottled water, juices, Before he made his choice, the stickers on one of the freezers caught his eye, Red, purple, blue and green, They advertised icecreams hed never tasted until a few years back, Living in the compound as a child, the occasional treat had come in the form of a piece of fruit, He settled on just the icecream, One with a nut and chocolate coating, ”
Okay, thats not really a quote from the book but it could be and Ill admit this style just drove me crazy in book one.
This time around I suppose Ive become a bit more accustomed to it and now I even have a Colter Shaw stilted voice in my head as I read.
I also think I preferred the mystery plot this time around which involves Shaw going undercover to infiltrate a cult.
The cult is so obviously based on Scientology that I wouldnt be surprised if they took exception, I remained pretty invested in the cult storyline throughout and my only beef might have been the ease of which Colter managed to get out of some sticky situations.
Colter remains a little bland but hes not completely unlikeable, Deavers supporting characters all tend to be pretty bland too, I much preferred the main supporting female character in this book than Never Games though, I did find some of her scenes a little comical, however, As in, she pretty much just ticked the boxes of the supporting female character in an action thriller book list Deaver keeps tucked away in his desk drawer.
While Colter investigating the cult is the main plotline, Deaver also included the continuing mystery of Colters fathers death, I would like to say he added it seamlessly but Im afraid he didnt quite manage this, In fact, the entire last part of the book is an info dump focusing on his fathers storyline and my cynical brain struggled with this ploy to suck the reader into buying book number three.
I probably shaved half a star off for this alone,
Oh, and I must also say that some of Shaws or Deavers inner thoughts about guns really emphasised the USs mindset about guns in general and on a couple of occasions I shuddered to think that the message regarding gun control is probably going nowhere in that country.
I know, its a piece of fiction in the action/thriller genre but a couple of times I found the gun thing really jarring.
So, in the end, I did like this book to a certain extent but I also feel like theres so many better written action/thriller books out there that will never sell half as many copies because Jeffrey Deaver is so well known and thats such a shame.
out ofColter Shaw, the enigmatic, survivalist, independent and dogmatic protagonist of the series returns for a very good instalment in the series by Deaver.
I really enjoy the uniqueness Shaw brings to the masterful and intriguing plot, Master Eli operates the Osiris Retreat, a deadly cult manipulating those who are vulnerable and emotionally devastated,
The second book ends with a definite hint that the family mystery at Echo Ridge is getting closer to being unravelled and a clear ending could be coming.
Looking forward to book. Two young men are accused of burning a Cross on the grounds of a Church, While investigating their crazed neonazi ideologies, Colter Shaw a Bounty Hunter stumbles upon the existence of a Cult which promises Immortality to its followers! He infiltrates the Cult under a false identity to but will he succeed Please read my detailed review from here sitelink gy/xclfr

That's what keeps me going! I like this author and I liked this book.
This was fun. I liked the MC. He was a little too perfect but I still liked him,
I liked the twists in the story, but there were some that completely left the realm of reality, So a few times, it didn't really work for me, Overall all though, I still liked this one, sostars. Deavers stock in trade is trickery and deceit, He regularly sets up a set of circumstances that lead you to an inevitable conclusion only to then confound you with an alternative outcome you hadnt considered.
Its clever and this trick has kept me coming back to his books year after year,
In Colter Shaw the author has created a new character, a man who primarily makes his living tracking down missing people for the reward money on offer.
I really enjoyed the first book in this series, sitelink The Never Game, which introduced Shaw as a man shaped by his survivalist father who, amongst other things, embedded a list of rules beginning with the word never in Colters mind.
In this episode the chase is on for a pair of men wanted for a nonfatal shooting and it leads to a connection with a charismatic, Trumpesque teacher who promises a perfect tomorrow.
Ill not delve deeper into the plot for fear of spoiling it for future readers,
It all starts up pretty well as in addition to the hunt for the two men we are tempted with the carry over mystery surrounding the death of of Shaws father.
But I found that the whole thing then got bogged down in a midsection that felt both laborious and strangely predictable, The last section of the book reintroduced an element of interest but by then the body of this story had been told and all that remained was what amounted to an advert for book three.
Will I come back for the next book I just might, Disappointed as I was in this one, I do like Colter Shaw and I am intrigued by the ongoing mystery element, I can forgive Deaver an off novel because I know he usually delivers, But this book warrants only three, Im afraid,
My thanks to HarperCollins UK and NetGalley for providing a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
