Peruse Aquaman 80th Anniversary 100-Page Super Spectacular (2021) #1 Designed By Dan Watters In Physical Edition
What can I say about this Its a collection of mini stories feature Aquaman and his supporting cast.
Some were good, some were just ok, Its kinda right down the middle, Overall, Im still glad I read this, You know it's okay to put more Aquaman into your Aquaman anniversary issue, This was a bit of a letdown for me although there are a few good stories in this anniversary anthology.
DC Comics is really doing this anthology thing to death, I can't blame them as these issues have been selling well, The artwork on some of the stories ranges from good to mediocre, It is not surprising that the best stories came from Jeff Parker, Geoff Johns, and Dan Jurgens, Though Johns's story was a bit of a letdown because he had such an epic run on the character.
I am really disappointed that DC Comics did not get Dan Adnett to come back and tell a story since his run was one of my favorites.
Let's face DC comics could care less about Aquaman which is a shame because the character has so much untapped potential.
To me, Arthur Curry is a bridge between so much of what goes on in the DC universe.
You can tell a story about magic, You can tell a story involving greek myth, Or tell a standard swashbuckling adventure tale, Aquaman is a man between worlds and the ocean is filled with so much mystery amp wonder, I really hope DC comics consider getting someone like Jurgens or Robert Venditti to write a new Aquaman series.
Aquaman is an essential element to the Justice League and the DCU, This book was okay but should have been so much better, This was the least successful of these anthologies, I don't think it really covered the different Aquaman eras well at all, Also, no Peter David After defending the seven seas for eight decades, its time to throw Aquaman a party! This allstarfilled anthology spans across the ocean kings legacy, not just celebrating his own triumphs, but also those of his greatest allies and enemies.
We look at his ongoing romance with Mera, his bitter rivalry with Black Manta, his brotherly conflict with Ocean Master, and the inspiration he lends to younger heroes like Tempest and Jackson Hyde, the newest Aqualad.
It would not be an Aquaman celebration without also looking at how hes changed over the years, including a brandnew tale of Bombshells Aquaman.
This special brings together Aqua talent past, present, and future, including reuniting fanfavorite creative teams such as Geoff Johns and Paul Pelletier, Dan Jurgens and Steve Epting, alongside Dan Watters and Miguel Mendonca.
Plus, two of the stories are prequels to two new Aquaman miniseries launching in September, kicking off anotheryears of undersea adventure! I've read quite a few anniversary specials now and this has to be the worst one to date for me.
It wasn't that it included so many characters I love all the characters of Aquaman, it was that many of the stories were completely lacking plot, feeling and more importantly relevance.
Too many times the writers were trying to be "artsy" rather than just write a story about the characters.
It's a shame because some of them had absolutely stunning artwork, 'The Rhine Maidens' particularly springs to mind, and zero plot.
There were a few good stories, otherwise I read this one with a big "WTF, was the editor thinking".
A collection of eleven short stories and some nice splash art, this is a decent decadal anniversary piece, but no more than that, and hardly somewhere youd want to start reading the line.
Some of the stories are simple fights, albeit dealing with some of the typical themes of the comics such as marine conservation and the rulership of Atlantis.
But there are a couple of character pieces in here, too, one for Aqualad trying to come to terms again with his estranged father, and the other showing Aquaman and Ocean Masters differing perspectives on a tropical storm.
The desire to cover a wide range of styles means that the whole is disjointed, with radically different costumes and looks for the main character indicating that theyre scattered over his timeline/reboot history and without the space to provide the necessary context.
The one set in the Bombshells universe is fun, though, with Arthur and Mera dealing with Rhine Maidens enslaved by the Nazis.
But it also means that Tempest and Aqualad get their own stories, even if theres no appearance by Aquagirl or Dolphin, leaving Mera as the only significant female character.
The last two stories are teasers for upcoming series, Each has differing strengths and weaknesses one works as a short story in its own right, but doesnt seem to be heading anywhere especially interesting, the other is more promising, but is clearly just the first few pages of something larger and ends abruptly without anything approaching a resolution.
I liked several of the stories well enough, I would give it.s if Goodreads'd let me, Foxtail:

A couple of good little stories, but the others are mostly forgettable amp dull, I finished it because of its brevity,
