loved it, and I dont understand all of the average reviews,/!!! The first page the first two paragraphs had me hooked, Its a commentary on human nature, Werthers sorrows can be taken literally or abstractly, Apply the emotions to other circumstances,
In the New Melusina, I did not feel for the main character as much, but an enjoyable story nonetheless, I feel sadder than I would have expected at its close, Reading Werther in thest century requires a certain suspension of expectation paired with a
willingness to absorb the lyrical quality,
What can be said of Werther His final act is of course a radically emotional one, a powerful rebellion against an insensible society, I love Goethe, and reading this novel for the first time was a wrenching, terrifying, incredibly beautiful experience,
The other two stories included in this volume are excellent, They are perfect opposites, too: "The New Melusine" is a silly, comical fairy tale, and "Novelle" is a disquieting reflection on nature, mankind, and art,
Wonderful work all round, The four go to The Sorrows of Young Werther rather than the culmination of the novel with the addition of the two short stories, My only gripes with it were the tonality of the first half of so, which touches on Werther's outlook on death and the lack of seriousness with which he approaches it.
With the exception of the latter half of the novel, Werther's romanticera viewpoint seems almost comedic, in a fashion reminiscent of dark humor, Although the epistolary style gave an interesting take on the firstperson perspective, I have found that it is not too much to my liking, The novel's ending turns to thirdperson for a time, and I found that to be a lot more smoothflowing than the majority of the novel, As for "The New Melusina" and "Novelle", they are an interesting addition, They are quite different than Werther, yet Goethe's narrative style is still apparent, They are interesting in their own right, and I say that not in the sense of being bad, but of having a theme that is not as present as within Werther.
With "The New Melusina" especially, I cannot even attempt to pretend that I understand what it meant, A master of poetry, drama, and the novel, German writer and scientist Johann Wolfgang von Goethe spentyears on his twopart dramatic poem n Faustn, published inand, also conducted scientific research in various fields, notably botany, and held several governmental positions.
George Eliot called him "Germany's greatest man of letters, . . and the last true polymath to walk the earth, " Works span the fields of literature, theology, and humanism,
People laud this magnum opus as one of the peaks of world literature, Other wellknown literary works include his numerous poems, the n Bildungsroman Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeshipn and the epistolary novel n The Sorrows of Young Werthern.
With this key figure of German literature, the movement of Weimar classicism in the lateth and earlyth centuries coincided with Enlightenment, sentimentality Empfindsamkeit, Sturm und Drang, and Romanticism.
The author of the scientific text n Theory of Coloursn, he influenced Darwin with his focus on plant morphology, He also long served as the privy councilor "Geheimrat" of the duchy of Weimar,
Goethe took great interest in the literatures of England, France, Italy, classical Greece, Persia, and Arabia and originated the concept of Weltliteratur "world literature".
Despite his major, virtually immeasurable influence on German philosophy especially on the generation of Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel and Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph von Schelling, he expressly and decidedly refrained from practicing philosophy in the rarefied sense.
Influence spread across Europe, and for the next century, his works inspired much music, drama, poetry and philosophy, Many persons consider Goethe the most important writer in the German language and one of the most important thinkers in western culture as well, Early in his career, however, he wondered about painting, perhaps his true vocation late in his life, he expressed the expectation that people ultimately would remember his work in optics.
