on Tanya and Emily in a Dance for Two

Book This book is about two girls, one American average ballerinaEmily and one French exquisite dancerTanya, Emily was carefree and danced just because she enjoyed it and I related to that, She didnt really care that she wasn't the best at it but she just enjoyed doing it, Emily and Tanya take a trip to the zoo and dance like the animals that they see in the zoo, Towards the end of the book the two girls dance like animals in the recital and become bestfriends, I thought this book was cute, The students will laugh when the girls dance the animal dances, The students learn that friends can be made at any time by anyone, I would use this book in my class for personal connections, One of my favorites of all time, Beautiful heartfelt story, about two girls who have the courage to be different, to follow their imagination, and dance to the beat of their own drummer.
So sad to see it's out of print, When Tanya, the smallest and wiggliest girl in her ballet class, makes friends with a talented newcomer, they both learn something, This was really cute. I loved that Tanya danced no matter what, even though her ballet form was not perfect or even ideal, And I loved that Emily found inspiration in Tanya's version of dance letting them become friends, It's a great story about finding friends through shared passion and not needing to be perfect to do what you love, Alissa paged through other books as I read this, However she stopped to look at the illustrations every time I turned the page, I agree with herA wonderful story told with sensitivity, warmth and a sense of joyand very cute illustrations! In ballet class I think it is sadly inevitable that children will compare themselves to those they think are better dancers than themselves.
I think that is portrayed so sensitively in this case and I love how each girl finds something to admire in the other.
And how they imagine their ballet steps imitating animal movements, A real winner and I look forward to sharing it with my students, Tanya loves to dance and she dances all the time, even when she's setting the dinner table and going to bed, In ballet class Tanya is the smallest and the wiggliest, but she doesnt mind as long as she dances, Then Emily joins class and Tanya cant take her eyes off her, Emily is a ballerina in every way, Unlike Tanya, Emily is calm and controlled, She can dance beautifully. She can even do a cabriole, Tanya cant. But Emily and Tanya dont talk, until the day they both walk home on the path through the park zoo, Emily can dance in class, but Tanya can see dance in everything around her, As they pass the animals in the zoo, Tanya shows Emily how to dance an ostrich, a flamingo, a leopard, Soon both girls are dancing giraffes, antelope, penguins, and best of all, Emily teaches Tanya to dance a wild goat, a cabriole! Now Tanya and Emily dance together all the time, in class and out, and at the end of the year recital they dance a pas de deux, with a cabriole of course.

Gauchs text is simple, yet evocative and easy to read out loud, The correct ballet terminology is always used and the different personalities of the two girls are expressed through the verbal description of their movements, as well as the illustrations.
The watercolor illustrations are beautiful compositions of light, shadow, and movement, Ichikawa not only accurately depicts ballet steps, but also captures the unique spirit and character of each girl, Short and strong, little Tanya dances with a spunky muscular joy, while Emily, lithe and slim, dances with poise and grace,
