Luminous new photography showcases contemporary and historic homes in the beloved Spanish Style in Southern California, while offering, as well, a rare look at the original inspirations to the style, born in Andalusia, Spain. The great appeal of Spanish Style homes lies in their aura of romance and drama, a sense of story, of magic, as well as in their very comfortable and engaging proportions and the great livability of the interior spaces. Deep shadow, arched doorways, trickling courtyard fountains, climbing bougainvillea on wrought iron window grilles, wood beamed ceilings, and white plaster walls are all hallmarks of the style. Here, through a celebration of contemporary and historic homes in Southern California, as well as existing historic precedents in Andalusia, Spain most notably the intricately detailed Casa de Pilatos in Seville and the Alhambra of Granada The Spanish Style House presents the definitive picture of the style as it exists today.Featured homes include the George Washington Smith designed Casa Blanca (1928) a fantasy made real in stone and stucco replete with the romance of old Morocco in its horseshoe arches, domes, and evocative tile murals and a Marc Appleton designed beach house (2007) in Del Mar, California, which is a dream on the sea and an eloquent testament to the virtues of the style for today.

Beautiful photos. Great information and plenty of ideas to put toward the building of our new Spanish Colonial style home.

Nice lay out and good picture continuity

Lovely content (pictures, historical context, narratives) and I was very excited about this publication as we live in a spanish colonial home. In addition, thought it would make a nice book to display in our home. The book is much smaller than I anticipated (I failed to notice that when ordering, so my bad). So what I hoped would be a substantial book, particularly for the price, is not what I expected. The photographs inside could have been enhanced by their display in a larger size book, as it doesn't do it justice.

Books about historical design and domestic architecture tend to run aground when the reader is treated to page after page of over decorated interiors, little of it even pertaining to the period or the style of the home itself. The romance of the subject is lost, and the spell broken. Either focus on exteriors, as in the book “Red Tile Style”, or stage the interiors with a disciplined minimalist eye, as in the case of Diane Keaton’s elegant “California Romantica” book. That said, the photographs of Andalusia are sensational, as are many of the exterior shots of the Spanish Revival homes of the 20’s.

I really like this book. It has great photos & design ideas. I was a little worried, based on other reviews, that this was going to be a tiny book with little pictures that were hard to see. It is not. It's great. It's not a giant coffee table book, but it is a nice book with lots of photos.
