experience wisdom. there is nothing wrong with diving into the unknown with a little help from those who know, great book I loved this book, It's not always the easiest to read but it taught me A LOT about the culture, I am very thankful i bought it We have several new Mynamar formerly Burma families in our church congregation, This little book helps us to know what their cultural and ethnic background is, and ways we can assist this incredibly brave and resourceful people who left Myanmar with little else that what they wore and a hope for freedom and new life in the USA.
I recommend this book to any person on group who work with Myanmarese, Was a great first look at the culture, It had a lot of helpful hints if you were moving theregreat Very interesting book of course, all the so because, unlike other CultureShock! titles, this one is written by a local of Burma/Myanmar instead of a long term expat.
As other reviewers have pointed out, most of the information is targeted at would be expats rather than short term tourists, There is a lot of valuable detail about customs and habits in a culture that appears to be very unlike Western cultures that should prove useful to anyone planning to live there.
One point to mention is that, perhaps because the author is Myanmar, some of the information and advice sounds decidedly odd to Western ears, For example, the author asserts that the Master and Mistress of the house i, e. you, the foreigner should not fraternize too closely with the domestic help such as the maid, driver or butler ! because this will confuse them about their station that Myanmar women do not make 'pretensions' towards intellectual discussion on topics like politics and society or that colds and the flu are common due to the hot climate.
However, overall this is a fascinating and enlightening book and well worth picking up, interesting for the traveler, neccessary for everybody who is going to live there, might be soon outdated due to the rapid developpements mobile/dress/internet, An excellent overview of an emerging country, An excellent book to discover thhis country and for the new explorer to Myanmer Everything important has yet been said in the synopsis written by very expert people:
>>>CultureShock! Myanmar is an illuminating guide to the culture and customs of Myanmar, offering readers a peek into this often forgotten Asian country.
Even though Myanmar has relaxed its restrictions on foreign visitors, the country is still relatively isolated compared to the rapidly globalising world, Find out how the Myanmar people cope with the lack of many daily necessities that those in a developed country take for granted, Be well prepared if you have to live in Myanmar with all the advice and information you need, The author provides you with practical tips on what to bring, what to prepare and where to go, In addition, discover fascinating insights into the inner world of the Myanmar people, their culture, traditions and etiquette as well as practical tips on how to do business with the Myanmar.
CultureShock! Myanmar is a must read for anyone who wants to visit or make his home in this intriguing and exotic country!
But I want to add some of my personal experiences, too.
For every really interested traveller going to a foreign country, especially an exotic one, the CultureShock Book is a real Must Read,
This series is a precious adviser on almost everything a "Stranger in a Strange Land" has to know and then to live in the country that we enter.
Especially in the Asian countries where the "Face" and its very easy loss because of misbehaviour, mostly unwilling these books are a real well of knowledge,
The most important informations are often in the "Religion" department the most obvious are: No Shoes on Temple Grounds, the Right Dress Code for Men and Women, Women have to Stay Away from the Monks, the Donations etc
And especially: How to ignore or circumvent the question of the politics a very "hot" item!
So I can only confirm: the Culture Shock Book about Myanmar ex Burma has been very very helpful for me on my voyage.
The "lessons" are very entertaining too, there are language hints, there is a Traveller's Quiz at the end, and history, mostly a very dry department, is also not too boring :
Like I said: A very Must Read for every responsable and interested traveller! Not useful at all Seemed a bit outdated at times, however there was a lot of good information and I'm glad I read this before going to Myanmar.
