short stories couldn't stop reading! I first read Death and Life of Bobby Z back inand have read pretty much everything that Don Winslow has written since.
I loved the collision of characters in the second last story Paradise and was completely blown away by the The Last Ride.
I read it on a long haul flight and dont know if the booze got to me, but somehow I think this book might have contained some of the best art Ive consumed in my life across all forms.
Im sure its great as a stand alone read, but its even of a treat for those who have read everything else he has written.
of often so very different significance, And in this collection ofshort stories masterly written by Don Winslow You can find the whole range of those meanings, from broken heart to broken life, from almost ridiculous to laugh out loud to so very sad that You perhaps Over the years I've read most of the author's work.
I have marvelled at the development of his style, his complexities of plotting and his ambiguities, By the latter I mean leaving for the reader to decide his/her decision of various points of moral imperative our stance on drugs, the ambiguities of political morality, the collapse of consensus etc.
. The author reintroduces old characters from his previous books, Friendly characters although they don't necessarily behave in a "friendly" way, caught up in new situations, A pleasure to remeet such gems from the past, It'll make me want to reread their histories, Mr Winslow is writing with an economy of expression, Short paragraphs and fewer words move the stories along with bravura and style, I had to ration my reading, One story a day. I failed. Winslow never sits still, is always ALIVE and fresh, He's a complete contrast to other successful authors who too often go stale, become paradies or imitations of themselves.
Following that, in Broken Winslow is best where he breaks new ground: for me the two best novellas in Broken are Crimeand The San Diego Zoo.
Crimeis a pitch perfect work of prose style, The San Diego Zoo begins with a comedic El Leonard feel, but gradually develops a special charm and an emotional sincerity that Leonard could never achieve.
The Last Ride and Broken the novella are just as good, really, The Last Ride echoes some powerful themes albeit from a very different point of view from Winslow's novel The Border Broken often has a somewhat similar feel to The Force.
The novellas that revisit old characters Sunset, and Paradise are "only" enjoyable, And I wonder whether these two engaged Winslow himself a little less than the all new material In my Kindle edn.
these two and only these two novellas contained minor mistakes/typos, Finally, than any other author I read, Winslow writes novels or here novellas that are pure reading pleasure from beginning to end.
He can turn on prose style when he wants to, but the writing is always alive and adaptive, always in the service of the story and the characters.
As for Winslow's novels, read The Power of the Dog, The Winter of Frankie Machine, The Force, The Border and others.
All affecting, thrilling, insightful masterpieces, I never read anthologies. Just don't like them. I'm a quick reader so anything underpages just doesn't keep my interest, Unless I know it's part of a series with to come, Then of course, my favourite author releases one, And one of the stories features two of my favourite characters, Frank Machianno and Tim Kearney, among others.
Well, I was sold. Bought it, read it, loved it, They are written in the style of the same Don Winslow who wrote The Winter Of Frankie Machine, The Death and Life of Bobby Z, The Dawn Patrol, etc.
They are all crime or thriller, but written in a quirky, witty, and very cool style, If you like El Leonard, early Robert Crais, or George Pelecanos, you will love Don Winslow, The first and last stories are somber and grim, More reminiscent of his The Force and Cartel books, In fact the last story put me on a bit of a downer, And will probably be appreciated by those in the USA who have experienced or live with the suffering of migrants along the US and Mexican border.
Overall, this was well worth the money, It revisits old characters and introduces some new ones, I thought at least four of the stories had enough plot and depth to have been the basis of a full novel in their own right.
So Mr Winslow must have a real killer for his next book to discard these in an anthology.
I can only wait in anticipation I don't usually go in for books of short stories but I relented here as it was Don Winslow and I have read every book now that he has on Kindle and enjoyed them all.
I did not realise when I purchased it that these particular short stories would bring back characters from previous books.
I was delighted to encounter them again, It was a bit like having a surprise party and unexpectedly meeting old friends again, I'd also mention that they may be "short stories" by Don Winslow's standard but these are definitely meal sized and not just snack sized and they are gratifyingly not "over before you have got your teeth into them".
The stories themselves are first class and I have particularly enjoyed the tip of the authors' hat to figures like El Leonard and Steve McQueen within the style of the stories.
Can't wait for the author to write some books, Am absolutely a Fan of Don Winslows writing, Read virtually everything he wrote, Again a great gripping story, Devoured it!Thanks, Don! you will not regret it, It features a couple of his most memorable characters in four of the five short stories, As always interesting, gripping, and very very funny, G. B. Germany You cant ask foremotionally moving entertainment Stephen
