I hate text books that try and prove that they are highly intellectual when they write them. Most people buy textbooks for information and help in mastering a particular subject. Whether that subject is advanced or not doesn't mean the writer has to make the learning process harder by making the book harder to read. This book isn't that. You read it and it gives you the information you need and that is that. No messing around, very good book for anyone doing any Inorganic/Solid State Chemistry. It has everything from the very basics and reintroduces group theory for the 3D lattices of Solid State. I say reintroduce because you need a basic understanding of group theory to understand where some of the notation and symmetry operations come from, because Solid State Chemistry uses a similar set of operations but a different set of symbols/labeling.

I am taking a first material science course and had no previous material science related experience. The first term of my university course was abundant in the new terminology and concepts, which were sometimes a bit confusing. This book is brilliant and it helped me a lot. Not only does it cover a wide range of topics from basic crystallography and X ray techniques to electrical, magnetic and optical properties of materials, it also explains the basics ideas in those topics briefly and clearly. The author focuses on you explanation of concepts and not on the derivations of the formulae. While this may make the reader wonder where some of the formulas came from, the fact is that when doing the introductory classes you normally want to focus on general understanding an not the derivations of the formulae anyway.I would recommend this book to anyone interested in learning the basics of material science.

Ok,This is a great book. Written well, clear concise and focused on the the subject. The questions in the back are well provided for in the book itself. The pictures feel like they are from some 1940's text but that I can get over. So no stunning visuals just a good Inorganic Text Book.
