Totem Tale: A Tall Story from Alaska Reviews

Very good for telling a story about how the totem animals came to be on a the pole. It's American as you'd expect so some American words e.g dove for dived, but it's bright and attractive and even has two page spreads. There are virtually no colourful, easily readable stories about totem myths.

A cute story to introduce my kids to the art of totem poles and the stories behind them. I bought this book with a selection of other, traditional aboriginal stories and this fit right in with the traditional folklore.

While this book is a nice introduction for younger children to totem poles and their history in Native American culture, I do wish that this story had information about the stories totem poles told, or even other resources for teachers and parents to use. I’ve found a staggeringly low amount of information that is engaging and applicable to young children, especially those aged 2 5. I know this isn’t the authors fault, but I do wish this story focused on the tradition in totem poles instead of just alluding to it on the last few pages. Also, this was a difficult book to read aloud as the illustrations go both vertical and horizontal. I had to continue flipping the book so the children could properly see the pictures and I could read the text. I wish all illustrations were one way.
