person who fought for what he believed and did not stray from his path, The world needs people like him, strong, will not quit, caring and honest. I applaud your wisdom and strength, Great read. This is one of the best books I have ever read, It tells the story surrounding the nomination, and eventually confirmation, of Thurgood Marshall to the US Supreme Court, It weaves the story of his nomination with other background material about the various players in the drama which makes for an interesting, and at times, tense book.
It demonstrates both the best and worst of humanity, and as you read it, you can appreciate just how far we have come, but how far we have to go.
As a person who is very interested in the Supreme Court, I have read many biographies and other accounts of the courts' inner workings.
This one, however, was different, because of the significance of the event upon which it was based, The nomination of the court's first minority justice raised the ire of many a politician, including such well known people as the late Strom Thurmond.
The book details the efforts of Thurmond and others to derail the nomination without anything but innuendo and insinuation, It also demonstrates just how horrible people can be when they want to, The actions of the senators that wanted to block this nomination were nothing short of abominable, as they were based upon nothing but Justice Marshall's race.
As I read this book, I was astounded by the depth of the hatred those people had for this man and others just because of their race.
Perhaps I have been naive but until this book I didn't realize just how pervasive the problem was back then, Even if you are not a fan of the Supreme Court, I urge you to read this book, It is a character drama in many ways and will provoke you to think about just how horribly the minority population was treated, and why a residual of that still exists today.
This book is by far, one of the greatest books that I have read, Written about the battle, as president Joe Biden has stated, “For the soul of this nation, ” The battle against white supremacy and the confederate agenda, passed down through the Southern manifesto, To those politicians,Democrats and Republicans holding holding allegiance to the evil system of white supremacy, The honorable Thurgood Marshall in my opinion is the greatest African American lawyer to ever face against a racist supreme court system, and win. . This book inspired me to reach out to African American to youths to be inspired always excell big, The author deserves a lot of credit for the research an interview that went into the writing of this book, This is an outstanding book, It goes into detail about the process that landed Thurgood Marshall on the Supreme Court, Even though I have always enjoyed learning about the history of Justices and the Court ,
most of the background about Marshalls acenstion to the court was completely new to me.
The book also shows that the divisive and polarized fighting we see in Congress now pales in comparison to congress in thes when many states still had Jim Crow laws and practices in place.
Prejudice against Blacks was not only the rule of law in some states , it was defended on the Senate floor, The book also shows the significant contributions Marshall made to the civil rights movements BEFORE he was appointed to the Supreme Court, I found the account of the exchanges in the actual confirmation hearing riveting, Its a must read for students of race relations in this country, Thurgood Marshall brought down the separate but equal doctrine, integrated schools, and not only fought for human rights and human dignity but also made them impossible to deny in the courts and in the streets.
In this stunning new biography, award winning author Wil Haygood surpasses the emotional impact of his inspiring best seller The Butler to detail the life and career of one of the most transformative legal minds of the past one hundred years.
Using the framework of the dramatic, contentious five day Senate hearing to confirm Marshall as the first African American Supreme Court justice, Haygood creates a provocative and moving look at Marshalls life as well as the politicians, lawyers, activists, and others who shapedor desperately tried to stopthe civil rights movement of the twentieth century: President Lyndon Johnson Congressman Adam Clayton Powell Jr.
, whose scandals almost cost Marshall the Supreme Court judgeship Harry and Harriette Moore, the Florida NAACP workers killed by the KKK Justice J.
Waties Waring, a racist lawyer from South Carolina, who, after being appointed to the federal court, became such a champion of civil rights that he was forced to flee the South John, Robert, and Ted Kennedy Senator Strom Thurmond, the renowned racist from South Carolina, who had a secret black mistress and child North Carolina senator Sam Ervin, who tried to use his Constitutional expertise to block Marshalls appointment Senator James Eastland of Mississippi, the head of the Senate Judiciary Committee, who stated that segregation was the law of nature, the law of God Arkansas senator John McClellan, who, as a boy, after Teddy Roosevelt invited Booker T.
Washington to dinner at the White House, wrote a prize winning school essay proclaiming that Roosevelt had destroyed the integrity of the presidency and so many others.
This galvanizing book makes clear that it is impossible to overestimate Thurgood Marshalls lasting influence on the racial politics of our nation.
