Book Review: The Bookshop on the Shore by Jenny ColganThe Bookshop on the Shore is a heartwarming and uplifting novel that celebrates the power of books, community, and second chances. Jenny Colgans latest installment is a delightful addition to her repertoire, perfect for fans of feel good fiction.Ailsa Calder, a struggling single mother, inherits a quirky bookshop on the Scottish coast from a distant relative. Alongside her young daughter, Ailsa navigates the challenges of small town life, bookshop renovations, and unexpected friendships. As she delves into the bookshops history and the communitys needs, Ailsa discovers a new sense of purpose and belonging.5/5

Though I did agree with some of the negative comments (mainly editing errors and an abrupt, rather baffling ending—thus the only 4 star review), I simply adored this little story! The author’s writing style is so conversational and, as we’d say in Texas, “folksy”, that you feel like you’re sitting cozily on a couch listening to your best friend tell the story of their life. Along with the fact that I’m missing all the characters and dying to know what happened to them, I also find myself longing to escape to the Scottish Highlands just to BE. What a magical place! If you’re stuck in the first few chapters feeling like it’s a little sluggish, DON’T GIVE UP! It’s absolutely worth finishing.

Since turning 80 earlier this year paying full price for Jenny Colgan new paper backs is a bit steep for me. Not that I regard her books as not worth the money, I absolutely love her writing which is always fresh, engaging, full of warmth and draws me in from the first page to the last! But, as a widow I have limited funds so, seeking out previously owned copies has become a means to continue my much loved Jenny Colgan outings! Not all these paper backs are in reasonable condition but, generally they are pretty good as in the case of The Bookshop on the Shore which has a good binding and clean pages and for which I payed pennies. See you again soon?

I really enjoyed the descriptions of Scotland in the fall and the wittiness of the characters sprinkled throughout. It had me laughing throughout. If you could combine Gil Girls with Jane Eyre and The Sound of Music, this is what you would get. It also dealt with some heavy topics like children dealing with extreme depression and what it is like to struggle financially as a single mom. And there is even some light creepiness thrown in, perfect for fall. Due to the heavy topics and some romantic parts, I would definitely label this as a book for adults.
