  I was very disappointed with this purchase For the cost I was expecting a higher uality book First it's smaller than most art books and contains relatively few images most of which are in black and white The text is overly wrought and philosophical but also full of typosThe most interesting part of the book thumbnail drawings of different kinds of compositions are poorly reproduced with labels that appear to be hand typed and glued to the drawingsThe publishers have added an appendix of color images to the end of the book It would have been nice if they could have edited the text for typos and replaced the black and white paintings with color rather than add a few color pages at the endMany artists consider this book to be THE seminal work concerning composition and landscape painting and while I have no doubt that it has a historical importance I have found many other books that have built upon this foundation in a much approachable wayI would like to see an updated edition with a lot polish

  This is an expensive classic While the content is good I found it difficult to read The text makes reference to the illustrations Plates scattered throughout the book and I was constantly referring to the Plate index to find out what page I should be looking at Often each Plate had various topics and it would take a while to find out which picture I was supposed to be looking at It wasn’t always clear and it was distracting I wouldn’t complain if this was a low cost book but for this price I really expected better There are some typos as well

  As a beginning oil painter I find this book on composition very helpful For me it is much easier to read and to absorb than Carlson's similar text I gave it four stars not because of the content but due to an unfortunate lack of editing Numerous obvious spelling and grammatical errors detract from the seriousness and passion of Payne's words
