Joe Newman describes a cultural shift that has reinforced anxiety and behavior disorders in children by negating parental authority. Even more important, he provides specific, non-punitive ways for parents to help their kids by taking back their authority. Filled with examples and experiences from the author’s own life as a child with A.D.H.D., the book is a treasure-trove of useful information.” (Barry Michels, psychotherapist and New York Times bestselling author of The Tools) “This book is packed with useful information. It is an insightful and practical guide for managing children. I would recommend it to any parent.” (L. Alan Sroufe, Professor Emeritus Ph.D. University of Minnesota) Raising Lions challenges us to re-examine our interactions and relationships with children, re-think the root causes of behavior problems, and find new ways to support healthy, happy development. I purchased Joe's book after hearing him speak on a podcast about the method he uses for approaching turning around problem kids and their behaviour I was intrigued to find out what his method of compassionate time out is and how he recommends disciplining strong willed children having a spirited 7 year old myself whose behaviour at times is extremeThe book goes into the reasons why children in this generation are turning out to have behaviour that is so different to our own and even previous generations and makes for a very interesting introductory section I found it fascinating to read that there is scientific evidence behind this and the shift in the way people now parent has resulted in our children being emotionally immature and unable to move out of the viewpoint of a young childI have begun applying the breaktime out method outlined in the book and was having an issue with using one particular part of it so took a chance and emailed Joe via his website not really sure if he would reply or if I'd get an automated reply that was generic or attempting to sign me up for an online session costing lots of money I was very pleased to get a personal reply back that was extensive helpful and suggested an alternative that would help meI would suggest that any new parent read this book before their baby gets to the stage where they will be learning to move over to interdependence as a toddler and older to avoid raising your child in a way that will not provide strong boundaries and encourage them to remain emotionally immature Also it is not too late to begin using this method with an older child many example stories in his book are up to teenager age As I've said my child is 7 and is responding to this well after years of trying other ways and systems that have all failed in the long term
