Had to quit the book at 20%. Male protagonist is abused by everyone and is made to accept it. Overcoming hardships is a general starting theme in books of this genre but an abusive co protagonist that is given a pass just because she is female is unacceptable. If the book had the characters reversed R. Wideman would be ostracized and removed from kindle. Even worse is the "loving and supportive " mother who along with others that should be condemning the bad acts enable the abusive conduct and force the male protagonist to capitulate to abuser. Additionally the story reads like cut scenes strung together. The only reason I'm not unfollowing is I read Goon Squad immediately prior which maintained the author's ability to write a good story.
