    Long story short my son thought he could get into medical school like nothing, I got him the book and it opened his eyes and oh look at that mom might know something. If you have teenagers looking at a medical future get them this book and tell them to start studying!!!!

    Some good general advice, but it is in desperate need of updating. It’s based on the old MCAT and some information is outdated or just plain wrong. I wouldn’t recommend it for anyone looking into med school these days.

    著者のCarleen Eaton氏は，カルフォルニア大学ロサンゼルス校の医科大学校で医学博士号を取得している。そして現在は，医歯薬学部，獣医学部，看護学校をはじめ医療系の大学や専門学校の入試対策コンサルタントを運営している。さて，本書は4年制大学(college)に入学してから医師になるまでのプロセスを解説している。タイトルに，“Getting into Medical School”と謳われているようにメディカルスクール(医科大学)の入試の説明が多いが，扱われている内容は4年制大学とメディカルスクール，レジデンシーの業務内容と，幅も深みも希望もある。米国で医師になるには主に二通りの方法がある。どちらも高校卒業後に4年制大学を卒業して，なんらかの学位を得なくてはならない。専攻する学科は定められていないが，著者は自然科学系の学科を専攻することを強く勧めている。医師になる第一の方法は，4年制大学の3年次から(あるいは卒業後)に，MCAT(Medical College Admission Test) を受験する準備をする。これと並行して志望するメディカルスクール(医科大学)を15校ぐらい選び，願書を提出する。出願の手続きは大ざっぱにいって第一次出願，第二次出願，面接から成り立っている。第一次出願期間中に推薦状を提出しなくてはならない。なるべく自分にとって有利な推薦状を書いてくれる人と懇意になっておく必要がある。この方法は，4年制大学を卒業後に間を開けずにメディカルスクールに進学する方法である。しかし，米国ではわが国よりも多くの人が，4年制大学を卒業してから医療現場で働いたり長期のボランティアをしてからメディカルスクールに進学している(大内,2020)｡医師になる第二の方法は，実は米国でもあまり知られていない。4年制大学を卒業した後に整骨医学の医科大学(Osteopathic Medical School)に進み，整骨医学の博士号(Doctor of Osteopathic Medicin:DO)を取得する方法である。米国ではメディカルスクールで医学博士号(Medical Doctor:MD)を取得した人だけでなく，この整骨医学の博士号(DO)を取得した人も医師として活躍している。出願プロセスは通常のメディカルスクールと同様であり，著者はMCATの成績がふるわなかった出願者に推奨している。以上，本書にしたがい米国人が米国で医師になるプロセスを述べてきた。では，上記の方法でも成績が及ばないけれどそれでも医師になりたい場合はどうすればよいか？　著者は，諦めずに英国，アイルランド，オーストラリアなどの海外の医科大学に進むことを勧めている。そして，アフリカ系アメリカ人やヒスパニックなど人種的なマイノリティー，すでに所帯を持っている人，障害者など，メディカルスクールに進学するのは不利な人にも惜しみないエールを送っている。＜文献＞大内啓・井上理津子,(2020),医療現場は地獄の戦場だった！,ビジネス社,東京:pp114 138.
