The year is 1744, and Prince Charles Edward Stuart is stranded in France, his hopes temporarily frustrated, as the planned French invasion to restore his father to the British throne has had to be abandoned. The prince, frustrated beyond endurance, makes an impulsive decision that will change not only the lives of the MacGregor family, but the history of Britain, forever.
Meanwhile in London, Beth, bored to distraction by the inanity of society life, hatches a plot with her friend Caroline to free the timid Anne Maynard from the clutches of her domineering guardians.
Once it is clear that the much hoped for invasion has been postponed, Alex and Beth go to Scotland for a few weeks in order to introduce her to her new clan and family. She is both excited and nervous at the prospect, but nothing in even her wildest dreams can prepare her for the challenges she is about to face.
An unexpected meeting whilst in Scotland has consequences that may prove disastrous for Beth and Alex. In London, events take an unexpected turn, as Beths good deed has repercussions that she could never have envisaged, proving that the past is not easily forgiven or forgotten.

The Gathering Storm (The Jacobite Chronicles Book 3) Reviews

Julia Branna’s third book in The Jacobite Chronicles series follows Alex and Beth MacGregor as they settle into the double life of their marriage. In London, they remain Sir Anthony Peters and Lady Elizabeth, while their true selves are known in Scotland as the MacGregor chieftan and his wife.
The Gathering Storm sees Alex and Beth working as a spy team in London society, both acting as innocuous and frivolous as possible in order to innocently obtain information from any person–regardless of position or social standing. This goal extends to King George III himself, as well as his son Prince William the Duke of Cumberland who is quite aggressively taken with Elizabeth. Close to their enemies, Alex and Beth must walk the finest of lines so as not to fall out of favor, which would be a terrible blow to Prince Charles Stuart’s intelligence network.
Alex and Beth share a reprieve at home in Scotland where she meets his family and clan, as well as her own long lost relatives. Here, Beth works hard to gain the favor and respect of the hardened Highlanders. So different from stiff London high society, Beth is immediately relaxed and taken in as family. In Scotland, both Alex and Beth can truly be themselves.
Yet as the title indicates, the Jacobite Uprising and invasion of Bonnie Prince Charlie is imminent. The MacGregors struggle with their role in London–a life of lies and vanity, always on the precipice of danger and exposure. Will they be able to return to Scotland before it’s too late? -
This third book in the saga takes the characters we have come to know or hate through challenging situations to be revealed at a deeper, richer level of what has molded and formed their moral choices. As humans in community, the influence of our moral authority defines our impact on relationships, communities and nations. As the storm gathers, we get a glimpse of what will carry these inspiring (or disappointing) personalities into the oncoming battle. It is critical to establish this foundation for the people on the pages to become realistic. We get a glimpse of the fierce loyalty and trust evident throughout historical Scotland that forms their fight for freedom. Brannan transports us into the complicated puzzle of politics, religion and society to bring clarity to the forces in play during the turmoils of countries fighting for rights and power. On to the next book in the series!

Love this cast of characters and their development as friends and family. The era covering the second rising and politics in England, Scotland and France are fascinating and well researched. But the characters are rich and strong and many plots, small and large, making it hard to put the story down. Cannot wait to see where all these threads take us!

This is the third book of this intriguing series by Julia Brannan. It just gets interesting by the page! The Jacobites are waiting for their Prince Charles to launch his attack on English soil to take the throne! The author does an incredible job of describing events as they unfold as the political pot is constantly stirring. The two main characters, Beth and Alex must keep up pretenses whole spying for Prince Charles. They take a trip to Alex's Scottish clan and Beth learns, what it's like to live as a highlander. The descriptions are raw and real as,are the secondary characters and resulting situations.
I love the relationship of Alex and Beth and the strength of of their bond as it's tested over and over.
There is obviously going to be a fourth book in the future, and I can barely wait.
I highly recommend this informative, sensitive story to history buffs and romance readers. This is such a good book! -
The third volume of the Jacobite Chronicles is excellent, probably better than the first two novels. The author has a vivid imagination and brings the characters to life in both trivial daily activities as well as visits with royal families or drama due to their dangerous spy missions. The reader gets to go to Scotland and learn about how the old Highland Clans lived and interacted. There are visits to royalty and learning about the English kings and princes of the 1740s. There seems to be history in this novel than in the prior novels, and the story is woven very well around the rising of the jacobites. An excellent read and I can't wait for the next book in the series.

This volume in the series is less interesting than the previous ones. It deals with domestic concerns and relationship issues with friends and enemies. It is probably setting up future conflicts for the plot. The writing and character development are still good. I'm withholding judgement in hope the series resumes the excitement and suspense of the first two volumes.

This series is quickly becoming a favourite and I am becoming very nervous about the outcome for not only Beth & Alex, but all of the other characters that are so beautifully human the Jacobites were not successful, so I know there will be some painful separations and losses in the future books. Brannan has a remarkable ability to create an exciting, yet believable storyline that is perfectly woven into the true historic events. Also appreciate that she addresses the actual events at the end (especial the less believable), showing she has done her homework. Cannot wait to continue reading this series.

I am not quite finished with this book but I keep wishing that there were books in the series because I really like the characters and would like to spend time with them. The personalities of the Royal family are extremely interesting and it is nearly unbelievable that they are so convinced that they are above making an error, or that anyone else''s opinion is valid. No wonder their style of rulers does not exist in Europe or the America's.

I rarely buy an entire set of books … but this series of Jacobite stories broke all former purchasing patterns!
I have a general interest in the period and places covered by this author. She has researched deeply and provided an entirely enthralling narration of events, full of compelling characters, and wonderfully described places and experiences.
I am an avid ready anyway, but bought all of these for my iPad, and had finished them all in just than a week they were un put down able! Thanks Julia

Another beautifully written book by Julia! Wonderful! I won’t give any spoilers, but my need to read the next book has grown almost as fast as my love for the characters! I can’t complement the author Julia Brannan enough, her writing style is so compelling it’s hard to put her books down. Even one of my most favourite authors Diana Gabaldon, has tweeted that she’s reading this series. What a compliment! So if you are an outlander fan you couldn't go far wrong by reading these whilst you wait for the next one. Buy the whole series, you won’t be disappointed., but my need to read the next book has grown almost as fast as my love for the characters! I've really enjoyed all the books in this series by Julia Brannan; they're all well written and their historical details are accurate and well researched which makes a lovely change to a lot of the so called 'historical novels' available! I never normally write reviews nor do I purchase the follow up books after the initial freebeethis is the exception!

This is another marvellously written historical novel in the third instalment of a wonderful series. An intelligent story which is easy to read and keeps your interest with twists and turns about the Jacobite movement and the dangers. The depth of love between Alex and Beth is never slushy but is the realistic deep love and regard between two people. It was like being reunited with good friends and family as the characters have great depth. I cannot wait for the next instalment.

Well, this is the third book in Julia Brannan's series of books The Jacobite Chronicles and the story continues to hold and intrigue. I found that I really did want to find out what happens to everyone. I gather there will be several in the series to look forward to!
Again, well written and plotted and with a real flavour of the opinions and atmosphere of the times. Will definitely buy the next book when it appears. A highly recommended series.
