  It's truly heart breaking to see yet another book from the Wheelock/La Fleur stable which poses as an aid to learning, yet does so little to further the pleasurable study of Latin for beginners. Here we have a number of ancient inscriptions presented, studied and discussed in terms of style, spelling, individual quirks and historical interest, which all could and should be fascinating: but, and it's a massive BUT, the author thinks it clever to give each inscription a vague (smug) title of his own rather than a translation. YES, that's right, using this book you will never actually know what the inscriptions say in English translation, unless you happen to know a friendly Latin inscription expert! I've tried Google translate to help me, but that doesn't always work on these examples. Further, Mr La Fleur then thinks you're going to go through numerous other examples, and complete dozens of truly mind numbingly torturous grammatical listing exercises, all without English translation, or any facility to check what you've done. It's horrendous!

  The book is fine, but it's been damaged and the front cover now has a big dog ear and bend across the front.

  Este é antes um livro de curiosidades que um de prática, prática mesmo. Para quem estuda latim com afinco e de vez em quando precisa dar uma respirada e procurar coisa mais leve. Esse livro é assim. Além disso, caso se queira compulsar este volume para aumentar a compreensão do Latim e desenvolver uma maior familiaridade com a cultura que ele modelou, é perfeito.

  Importante suplemento com excelentes textos comentados, gramática, provérbios e ditos latinos, e vocabulários com muitas palavras traduzidas. Excelente complemento da gramática principal Wheelock's Latin, 7th edition, 2011, para os que quiserem se aprofundar no conhecimento do Latim.
