Great writing but the story didn’t grip me. Disappointed

Almost sure I've read all his books and always love them. Having only a few snippets of information was apparantly enough for him to write this page turner novel, set in so many very different places, described with such eloquence. Brilliant. Looking forward to the next one, as always.

William Boyd is a writer with a sophisticated lightness, able to combine psychological introspection, historical narration, and fiction in a perfectly balanced composition. He is able to join complexity with simple narration, never simplistic. The apparent ease in writing without effort is the result of a mastery difficult to equate. This novel absorbed me completely, and took me away through its path in a friendly and elegant way, along with the beautiful character of Cashell Greville Ross.Giovanna P

A spellbinding read from a master of the genre.

What is it about William Boyd books? They have a long (too long) interesting plot of impossible complexity, but are written in the style of a 1950s recipe book. I always enjoy staying his books and end up getting I've wasted so much time.

I loved the life history of this one man. Highly recommended.
