  This book is a must read for all improvisers and creative humans. Patti debunks myths, questions rules and hot wires us back to our authentic imaginative selves. As well as inviting us to look at our habits and defaults, she raises a battle cry to adventure, meaningful storytelling and, critically, the power of supportive collaboration. Drawing on years of experience and a passion for play, she interrogates behaviours and inspires us to evolve as people and artists. So often performers look inwards and get lost in their own process or worry about who they think they should be. Patti invites us to focus outwards to our fellow players, to empower and support them and in so doing, surprise and enlarge ourselves. She reminds us to take responsibility for the stories we tell and the way we interact with others, the communities we create and the spaces we share. Political, profound, mischievous and maverick, ‘Improvise Freely’ raises the bar for improvisers and improvisation everywhere.

  Ich habe das Buch noch nicht komplett durchgelesen, auch bin ich nicht so gut in englisch. Trotzdem gebe ich zur Orientierung für Interessierte schon einmal meinen Eindruck wieder.Jedes behandelte Thema (z.B. 'Ja, und ', Keine Fragen stellen, 'Wer, was, wo' und einige andere Regeln) wird sehr ausführlich dargestellt, es werden auch andere Autoren und Impro Spieler zitiert. Patti Stiles Ansichten werden deshalb fundiert und nachvollziehbar dargestellt.Viele Beispiele decken sich mit meinen Erfahrungen (als Anleiter und als Spieler)Gerade wer die Werke von Keith Johnstone oder Truth in Comedy oder UCB gelesen hat findet hier eine sinnvolle Ergänzung und Weiterentwicklung der dort vorgestellten Ideen (Regeln).Es ist ja meiner Ansicht nach nicht so einfach, Inhalte aus Büchern in die Praxis umzusetzen.Bei diesem Buch sehe ich eine gute Chance, dass sich hier mein Improspiel verbessert. Es werden Grundhaltungen vermittelt Ideen die sich hinter den Regeln verbergen.Das Buch ist meiner Ansicht nach für Impro Lehrer/Gruppenleiter und Spieler gleichermaßen geeignet.Meine Sammlung von Impro Büchern ist sehr groß, dieses Buch hat, auch wegen des Praxisteils (über den ich jedoch noch nichts genaueres schreiben kann) einen Spitzenplatz in meiner Lieblingsliste.Ich weiß nicht ob es Zufall ist oder von mir falsch interpretiert: Tendenziell werden eher Regeln des 'amerikanischen' Impro Theater auf den Prüfstand gestellt. Vielleicht wird dieses dem einen oder anderen Missfallen, ich sehe hierbei die Chance das Potenzial des Comedy basierten Improspiel weiter zu steigern.

  Patti Stiles est une coach d'impro extraordinaire et son livre est un outil précieux pour tout·e improvisateur·ice non débutant·e et, surtout, tout coach d'improvisation qui souhaite réfléchir au bien fondé des 'règles' de l'improvisation : 'ne pas dire non,' 'ne pas poser de questions dans une scène,' autant de dogmes qu'elle démonte un à un, en invitant à ne pas les suivre à la lettre mais à retrouver l'esprit qui les a vu naître, pour que les pratiquant·e·s de l'improvisation théâtrale retrouvent la liberté de jeu et la joie de la découverte nécessaires à toute exploration artistique, plutôt que de se cantonner à n'être qu'une liste de recettes rassurantes mais étouffantes qui brident notre créativité.

  A treasure trove of knowledge from an incredible improviser.I can only confirm that what Patty writes is exactly what she has been teaching for years. Hopefully it will open the eyes of players who follow the rules too closely.
