BRIDGMANS COMP GUIDE DRAWING FROM LIFE 5TH ED : Bridgman, George B. Reviews

I think this book is a bit overrated. It's a classic, yeah, no doubt, but the comments to the drawings are kinda pointless. The written explanation of the anatomy is useless and dispersive, but the drawings are very helpful, in some parts. I'm not following his method to draw face, as is it confusionary and not precise (Loomis books are waaaaay better for this). For the anatomy, certain part are very well done, legs, arms chest and hands. Feet are just vaguely treated, and always with pointelss written description. I dont need a written description of the anatomy if you are showing me, I need you to tell me what is the best way to show them, the best way to give a certain aspect to the people I'm drawing (since it's a guide for life drawing). The draping part is confusionary. Some of the drawings are clearly wrong, and very disproportionate and i wonder how the hell they end up in the book. All in all, the book is still worth reading and study, for certain chapter very well done. It's best to use other sources as well to have viewpoints of the muscles.

Any aspiring artist would benefit from dipping in and out of this book , it guides you through the fundamentals of form and structure ,and in so doing so , gives you that essential little kick ,to get over the white fright ,and do some drawing , just draw , and draw ! , and hey if it does not work out for you !! , go back to book and draw some this book covers just about everything ,and is well worth the cost.

Earlier editions of this book were infamous because some of the drawings were printed upside down. Also they managed to be even cryptic than the original small books in quite a few places. This edition corrects the first flaw, and also somewhat rectifies the second flaw by expanding the most difficult passages. Highly recommended if you do any figure drawing at all, you definitely should have this book on your shelf.

Figures stylised, but no book can do everything. Good for beginners and advanced. Breaks the human form down allowing an knowledge enabling the artist to create their own images.

Although, there are some differences. The cover is different (missing all text on the golden sticker part and says 75 expert lessons instead of 22), as the copy I got was manufactured by Singapore, not Canada. I hope that everything will be fine with the illustrations and text as I get further into the book. The quality of printing is great. Don't regret ordering it all the way to Russia
