Trick or Treat by LA Cotton is a prequel novella to the book On The Rebound. It is the back story to Calliope James “Calli” and Zachery Messiah. Childhood sweethearts who unexpectedly broke up two years ago, leaving them both feeling betrayed and broken hearted. This is a dark story about what happens when they see each other for the first time since he left school without a word. Calli is a quiet, quirky girl who prefers living her life behind the lens of her camera. We hear how her family has been torn apart by secrets, betrayal and basketball. Zach had promised Calli the world then suddenly dropped her like she meant nothing to him and she has never really recovered. She is full of self doubt, anxiety and a sense of worthlessness, not helped by the fact she still doesn't know what happened between them or why he changed both his mind and character. They had been best friends with a special bond and shared secrets so no one knew how badly he’d hurt her.Calli and her best friend Madison are now seniors at Bay View High and find out Zach is unexpectedly back in town for the Halloween weekend. Calli is persuaded to attend the annual Devil’s Night Party and while taking photos Zach approaches her. He has physically changed and she totally underestimates the affect he has on her. Any hope her best friend is back dies in the hatred and darkness she sees in his eyes. His words are harsh and he definitely not pleased to see her.The whole evening becomes a great game of cat and mouse and they have great verbal sparring sessions as they take their frustration out on each other in the very creepy setting of a haunted house. Since Zach left she has been picked on by a girl called Tilly and she enjoys taunting Calli at the party. Zach uses this to his advantage and the author portrays the horrendous effects of bullying extremely well.I felt that Calli is so lacking in affection that although what Zach does is dubious, her reaction is understandable. She stands up to him one minute and melts the next but he just as bad. Zach is like a Jekyll and Hyde character and I am sure there is so much to him and a good reason he behaves this badly. They definitely have some unfinished business and both have issues that continue to affect their lives so don’t take a side yet. I am looking forward to hearing his side to the story in On The Rebound and find out what really happened to break these troubled sweethearts up.

Trick or Treat is a prequel novella to L.A. Cotton’s NA romance standalone On the Rebound which is releasing December 15th and I am now left desperate for ! Written with a Halloween theme, this short story is perfect for this time of year.I am so intrigued to know , not only about Calli and Zach’s relationship, but about the individuals themselves. It appears that Zach has changed so much since leaving Bay View High School for college and I cannot wait to discover what caused this. I also want to see Calli realise her dreams and I am certain we will find out if this happens when the full length novel releases.L.A. Cotton is a relatively new to me author and I am still kicking myself for taking so long to read her work. I’ll never make that mistake again and On the Rebound is already on my ‘to be read’ list. I am certain that once you’ve read this short story adding the book will be the first thing you do too! Trick or Treat had me hooked from the very first page and I am so excited to see where Calli and Zach’s journey takes them both.

I absolutely love LA Cotton and her books so when I saw this short story that leads into her new book On The Rebound I was drying to start the journey that is Calliope and Zachary! And it starts this story off with a bang when we find out that this pair were once childhood friends that turned into then completely went the opposite way with them not even talking any. Then one night they meet again at a local party and sparks fly between this quiet friendly girl and total bad boy! This short read leaves you desperate for and so ready to jump into the book to see where things go for these guys!

This had me hooked onto calli and zach's story, I didn't initially realise it was a prequel but immediately downloaded the 1st book after reading this. The scene at the Halloween House between the two was intense and whilst I wish calli had walked away at certain points, I'm also glad she didn't, because it added to the tension and backstory of the two.I don't think you have to read this before you read their book, but I think it helped as the scenes/people from this are brought up a few times in book 1.

Trick or Treat (Steinbeck U #0.5)Calliope falls back into the arms of her old friend & lover, Zach, when he returns for a weekend. He hadn't spoken to her for over a year before graduating early & leaving. He completely cut her dead! What was she thinking?🙈😢Friends to enemies. Full of angst, lust, regret & confusion!🌟Debbie, 1970, UK
