This is a lovely book. Both my (very advanced) 7 year old and 10 year old have read this and thoroughly enjoyed it. It is based in the North East, around Whitley Ba, where I lived as a child so it was very nostalgic for me, but my children (not from the North East) enjoyed it despite not knowing the area. It teaches quite a bit of history without the reader realising.

This book is brilliant!!! It is very child friendly and it is really funny. This book tells the story of a boy called Alfie Monk and he is over 1000 years old!!! Alfie embarks on a journey to live a normal life just like anyone else, but he does make friends along the way. I am going to warn you about some parts of this story are quite sad. Most people would think living forever would be brilliant but Alfie Monk has experienced it and he wouldn't agree. This is quite an adventurous and historical story, but some moments are really heartwarming. Overall I would recommend this book to 11 12 year olds.

I bought this book for my 8 year old son after he had read Mr Welford's Hamster book, and he who loved it. I read the beginning before handing it over and liked the story and the writing too. The story telling might be a bit complex for younger children as there are several shifts in the narrator perspective. But this fact has the potential of teaching them something about narrators and complexity in a story line.

Gobbled up by both boys and girls in my Year 6 class. They literally read it in one go and are fighting over it in class.

What a fabulous story. It’s about a boy who is destined to live forever, he’s on a quest to grow up and ultimately get married, grow old and ultimately die. I read to my 11 year old (because he loves being read to) and he kept sneakily reading on without me because he was gripped.Wouldn’t recommend for a sensitive child who’s recently bereaved. However, the mature theme is exactly what we loved about this book. I’m sure I’ll re read this one.
