This book deals with the origins and early history of the dynasty of Turkish slave origin which in the first half of the eleventh century AD, became a mighty power
controlling lands from western Persiato the Panjab and from' what is now the northern Uzbekistan Republic to the shores of the Indian Ocean in Baluchistan and Sind. The book is based on the original Persian and Arabic sources for the period, and describes the process by which, from a Turkish steppe background, Sultan Mahmud of Ghazna and his son Mas'ud assembled by force of arms the most powerful empire known in the Islamic world since the disintegration of the Baghdad caliphate. Much- of the Sultans' energy was devoted to the exploitation of India, with its rich temple treasures and reserves of slave manpower, and Mahmud in particular achieved a great contemporary reputation as a hammer of pagans and heretics, before the attacks of a new wave of Turkish invaders from Central Asia, the Ozhuz, overran the western provinces of their empire by 1040.

    کتاب تاریخ غزنویان یک کتاب تاریخ دقیق و خوب‌نوشته‌ست، دورهٔ مشخصی رو در نظر میگیره، منابع زیادیرو کنار هم استفاده میکنه و با دقت زیاد نظرات و احتمالات مختلف رو کنار هم میچینه و ریز میشه. میتونه الگوی بسیار خوبی برای چنین کارهایی باشه. جالب اینکه در بررسیهای تاریخی از .متون نظم هم استفاده میکنه و مثلا برای روشنتر کردن یک واقعه و گوشهٔ ازش یک بیت از مسعود سعد میاره (البته درین کار فضل تقدم با او نیست) ترجمه‌ش از مهدی انوشه‌ست. بچشم من ترجمهٔ خوبیه، هرچند درست ویرایش نشده. گاهی جملها طولانی میشند، اجزاش پس و پیش میشند و کلا از دست در میرند.
    اما تاریخ غزنویان کتاب تاریخ بسیار خوبیه که من نتونستم ازش زیاد استفاده کنم. عملکرد حافظهٔ من ضعیفتر از این حرفهاست که بتونم یک کتاب تاریخی با این همه جزئیات رو حتی دنبال کنم. فکر میکنم یک تصویر بسیار محو در حد یک جای زخم از کودکی درم باق گذاشته که باعث شه دفعه بعد که چیزی در مورد غزنویان میخونم حس کنم با این حرفها آشنام و جایی دیده‌مشون. بهرحال براه بادیه رفتن به از نشستن باطل.
