Dixie In The Big Pasture Reviews

I read this book back in middle school, I think, and really liked it.
I liked the time period it was set in, and how the guy in here was Native American. I think his name was John Three, as in John 3:16 from the Bible. When he went to a white school, he had to change his name.
I think the author was inspired by her aunt, or grandma’s life on the prairie, so this is kinda based on true events, or inspired from her relative’s life, something like that, which made it all the more cool.
I remember her family moving to the prairie. She sees the boy naked, or half naked, by the creek, and remembers seeing what boys look like in some encyclopedia or research book.
She ends up with his horse, and he thinks she stole it, or something along those lines. He has an animal’s foot, and I think she thinks that he killed her dog, but it turns out to be a rabbit.
There may have been some kind of fire or something at their house, and the townspeople help them. Or they help them build something, I’m not real sure. I remember a scene in town, too, I think.
I remember thinking that the characters were too young, I think they were 13, so there wasn’t really any romance in here, and I wish there had been.
I recommended this book to my sister, too. She had all the good books, but this was one of my all-time favorites, so I wanted her to read it.
My library discarded it, and I’ve been searching like a madwoman at their bookshop for years, hoping it’ll turn up. I would love to have this.
