Basyang was the pen name of Severino Reyes for theshort stories that he wrote for children.
My review of the first volume is sitelinkMga Kuwento ni Lola Basyangstars, I am reading the second volume because the very first short story that started theothers is in this volume.


There areshort stories included in this collection and I likedof them, I found the original story, the one that started them all: "Ang Plautin ni Periking"below just amazing.


Ang Princesang Naging Pulubi, STARS
Feels like "The Prince and the Pauper" in a way because the proud princess becomes a pauper.
The twist is quite unpredictable and the ending is definitely feelgood,

Let's say that I did know that this was the FIRST STORY that started Reyes to write theothers, I would still rate this withstars.
The story is really imaginative, It reminds me of a similar story I heard when I was a young boy and the moral lesson is clear: never underestimate the people who seems weak physically because they can be smarter than those who look physically able and powerful.

Three brothers with the youngest being different, This reminds me of thechildren's book by John Ruskin sitelinkThe King of the Golden Riverincluding the three people who help the young man to reach his objective and the prominence of gold in the story.
The similarities are just creepy,

Ang Sula ng Sawa, STARS
I am still afraid of snakes, I just cannot hold them even those that are big and white and you are supposed to put it around your neck for picture taking.
This story is

about snakes and while reading, it gave me creeps just by imagining how the big and many snakes would have been if this were a true story.

I had a good time reading this book because it reminded me of my childhood days listening to "Magnon" and "Zimatar.
" You know when the protagonist is facing a difficult situation and along the way meets all sorts of people who give him power Then in the end when he is facing his enemy and in a losing position, he remembers all those powers It's here.


Ang Dragon sa Ilog ng Kingwa, STARS
The image on the book cover comes from this story, It is an image of a dragon's head and a virgin young lady who is being offered to the dragon so people will not dry of dehydration.
The story is the most suspenseful and scary among the ones that I've read so far,

Binibining Tumalo sa Mahal na Hari, STARS
I think I read or heard a similar story before and it made me fall in love again with the unassuming heroine in this story.
Clever young lady. This story is somewhat different from the others because the protagonist is a young lady, Most of the others have male protagonists,

Ang Ilog ng Telebeng, STARS
The story of Umeng and Tisya, Umeng wants to have a nice wedding so he dares to take a bath on a river called Telebeng during full moon.
There are tiyanaks who show themselves during full moon on that river, This is scary too especially when I remember full moon nights in the barrio where our family used to spend our summer breaks from school when I was a young boy.


Ang Hari sa Bundok na Ginto, STARS
This story is similar to the others in the book, A story of a mortal man who falls in love with a mysterious lady in an enchanted kingdom.
The man is being looked down by his parents because of his indolence so he leaves the house and looks for the mountain of gold.


Ang Tatlong Nagpaligsahan, STARS
Totally different from the others in this collection, Neither there are princes and princesses here nor witches and giants, This seems like a tale of town folks, three men actually who compete with each other about a passerby, a pastor.
I liked the the idea but I did not like the fact that they victimize a poor pastor.


Ang Prinsipeng Ibon, STARS
I also read the illustrated book, written by Christine S, Belen, of this yesterday and that illustrated version is a lot better, This is about two lovers, one is a princess and one a bird, and since the father king is against their relationship, the bird has to prove his love to the king.


Prinsipeng Mapaghanap, STARS
Sad ending but it seems like the right way to end the story, The message is clear: beauty is skindeep, This story proves that a fairy tale may not always have a happy ending to be entertaining,

Overall, this book is better than the first volume, I really appreciate what Anvil Publishing, Inc, is doing: making the young people experience the beautiful stories of Severino Reyes who is considered as the "Father of Sarsuwela Stage Plays" in the Philippines.


Kudos to you, Severino Reyes, Kudos to Anvil Publishing, Inc, The "PRINSESANG NAGING PULUBI" is the English version of KING GRISLYBEARD of Grimm's Fairy Tales, Some of the stories in "Mga Kuwento Ni Lola Basyang" are the same in Grimm's Fairy Tales or Hans Christian Andersen Fairy Tales.
I think the author translated those European fairy tales to Tagalog because Filipinos during that time were not yet fluent in English.

Isinilang si Lolo Basyang sa Sta, Cruz, Laguna at nagtapos ng kolehiyo sa Unibersidad ng Santo Tomas,

Sinasabi sa libro na nagsimula ang mga kwento ni Lola Basyang sa Lingguhang magasin na Liwayway, at doon nagsimula ang mga walang kamatayang kwento ng hiwaga, mga kaharian at kababalaghan.


Ang librong ito ay ikalawang bolyum na, labing dalawang piling akda ni Severino O, Reyes sa higit limaandaang kwento na nailimbag sa Liwayway, Kasama sa antolohiyang ito ang "Ang Binibining Tumalo sa Hari" na isa sa pinakapaborito ko sa libro dahil sa matalinong pagpapakita ng sagot ng isang ordinaryong babae sa isang hari.
Isa pa rito ang "Prinsipeng Mahanapin" kung saan pinakita nya ang kahalagahan ang pagmamalasakit sa iba, Nandito rin ang dalawa sa kanyang klasikong kwento, "Ang Plawtin ni Perikin" at "Ang Prinsesang naging Pulubi"

Maituturing na mga kwentong pambata ang mga maiikling kwento sa librong ito ngunit kung babasahin at higit panguunawain ang kagandahan ng likha ni Severino Reyes ay hindi lang pambata dahil siguradong pupukaw ito sa iyo anuman ang edad mo.
