U.S. National Debate Topic, 2004-2005: The United Nations by Cullen Thomas

The 2004-2005 National High School Policy Debate will consider the question of whether the United States should substantially increase its support of UN peacekeeping operations. Only partially devoted to the specifics of that question, this reader presents a selection of 22 academic journal, newspaper, encyclopedia, and other articles as an introduction to the United Nations, its activities, and related controversies. The first nine articles explore the origins and major activities of the UN and discuss the work of its individual programs and specialized agencies. More pertinent to debate question, the remaining material is devoted to the history UN interventions, US-UN relations, and questions of reform of the international organization.
