I am an independent, To me this means that I am not registered with any political party, and when it comes to elections I look at the issues, the platforms, and the people involved, and then vote for people that share my view of good government.
I have been of voting age for overyears, and it has not at all been unusual for me to vote Republican in some races in Democratic in others.
. . voting a split ticket is the norm for me,
Anyway, when I saw Alan Colmes' book, "Thank the Liberals for saving America" I was intrigued, so I picked up a copy and gave it a read.
I have to admit that Colmes makes some fantastic points, For example, if you like weekends, hour work days, annual vacation time, etc, then you need to thank liberals,
I was also interested to read what Colmes had to say about the birth of America.
America was WAY beyond a liberal idea, . . it was a radical idea, and even the conservatives among the Founding Fathers were liberals and political extremists.
So when did the word "liberal" become aletter word in some circles I started to ask myself as I read on.
I have to admit that Colmes' comments rung true with me on many topics, but not all.
After all, how many books have you read that you agreed with totally I'll bet the list is pretty short.
And if it's not, I recommend reading a lot more,
Anyway, I found Colmes' comments to be insightful and instructive, . . even if we don't see eye to eye on everything, I appreciate the way he is able to disagree with people of different political persuasions than his without being disagreeable a skill and attribute that too many people think they can live without, but desperately need.
I highly recommend this book to anyone of any political persuasion, Of course, people who lean left will feel more at home with most of the points made than people who lean right will.
Even so, I still recommend it,
stars. Fox News' famous "token liberal" Alan Colmes has written a book for those who have fallen hook, line, and sinker for the BigCconservativepushed idea that "liberal" is a dirty word: those who shun liberals and those who are afraid to admit they are liberals.
Colmes does a good job of laying out the liberalism that lies at the heart and root of America, but he's not speaking to the choir here.
No, he really means to speak directly to conservatives so they know more of their history before they go mouthing off on the internets about dirty liberal antiAmerican scummaking themselves look mighty stupid in the process.
Colmes does this with a bit of tongueincheek, of course, because Colmes does have a sense of humor.
He cautions conservatives, for example, not to read the points at the end of each chapter, because those are just for his liberal readers.
The book itself is written at about an eighthgrade reading level, so most people will be able to understand it.
Closet liberals will feel pride when they see such a fine compendium of liberal accomplishmentsthat, by the way, some conservatives probably think they came up with.
Conservatives may be shocked to realize that some of their most lauded heroes were liberalminded,
Colmes makes it clear how much this nation needs its liberals, as it always has.
But America needs its conservatives, too, Most of all, if liberals and conservatives are to work together for the
good of the country, all of us need to be educated about our nation's history and to be able to talk to each other about the American values we hold in common.
Colmes has written a book to launch that discussion, A surprisingly good civics lesson, Sadly, it will not be read by the people that need to read it the most.
Liberal means free, open and generous,
The right wing has convinced people that it is, or is like, a disease "Liberalism Is a Mental Disorder" by Michael Savage, or a Tshirt: Liberalism Is a Disease" by CafePress or a social stigma "How to Talk to a Liberal If You Must: The World According to Ann Coulter".
The term "liberal" has been so nastily trashed that even liberals don't use it in favor of the term "progressive" making conservatives "regressive" as the author points out.
In this book Alan Colmes reminds us that American Revolution was fought for liberal ideals and that the resulting US Constitution is a liberal document.
Regardless of what Americans will tell a pollster, Americans are liberal by nature of the country's history and culture.
He notes that when real life intervenes, such as when a friend or relative is raped or out of a job or needing surgery without health insurance, selfidentified conservatives become remarkably liberal.
Medicare and Social Security which are widely supported, and are now so institutionalized that they are not recognized as liberal programs, when in fact, they were conceived by and fought for against conservatives by liberals.
Not only are the US Constitution and governmental social programs liberal, Christian values are too.
Charity and love are Christian values, as they are of all the world's largest religions, Apologies and acts to right wrongs are part of the "do unto others, . . " creed. When the government acknowledges past errors and Colmes reminds us how most modern presidents have or when it tries to provide for the needy, the conservatives, many who identify themselves as well mannered Christians criticize and condemn.
In the first half of the book, the strongest case is made as to why liberals should be thanked.
The second half of the book covers liberal issues, While it draws connections, the first examples are most established and fundamental,
If you understand history and are up on current events, there won't be much new to you.
Conservatives who think the US Constitution is a conservative document, or that it created a "Christian nation", should read this book, but I doubt that they will.
Colmes arranges it as a handy reference guide for use when speaking about these issues with conservatives.
This book is short and in the popular format, I'd be a fan of a more detailed work, but that is not the nature of this book.
If one is a selfdefined "conservative" according to today's definition, this book is likely to have a whole bunch of information of which you've been unaware, or at least had not completely considered.
If one is a selfdefined liberal or progressive, it may not have much that is new to you.
However, Alan Colmes lays out his case that, technically speaking, all Americans are liberals because of the country's legal basis in liberty.
He examines the Constitution right off the bat, and explains its basis in liberal thinking, He then moves on to financial, employment and social issues including demonstrating how even conservatives become more liberal when they are personally affected by those issues.
Right up to the minute with issues and political science covered via exceptional research more thanpages of endnotes document Colmes' findings, this is a book that I really think everyone could benefit from reading.
Unfortunately, I would also wager that the folks most likely to need the information contained in this volume are the ones least likely to pick it up.
:/ Very good book, very informative, I think this book should convince everyone that we all need to get behind the liberal agenda and move our country forward.
Now. In "Thank the Liberals, " political commentator and Fox News radio host Alan Colmes explains how people who fight for liberal ideals help our country move forward.
With his trademark humor and wit, Colmes walks readers through the founding of our nation and shows how America was based on a liberal idea.
Our very founders were progressives, and it's progressives who have led America to be the country it is today.
Through legislation, constitutional amendments, Supreme Court decisions, and the actions of grassroots Americans, we see that it is liberal efforts that are responsible for programs intrinsic to our American DNAprograms like Social Security, Medicare, assistance for the needy, and the government safety nets that have saved us during the recent economic downturn.
Colmes's goal is to show not only where we are today, but also where we as a nation are going and how it is liberals who will get us there.
The divide between conservative and progressive aims has gotten ever more stark, and it seems that many conservatives are trying to take us backward, revoking or rolling back hardwon rights and impeding progress, which at best keeps us stranded in the status quo.
This continual push to the right is something liberals must fight, and fight they do, On everything from preserving the separation of church and state, to climate change, regulating immigration, caring for the poor, and making peace, not war, Colmes shows how liberals are leading the way.
"Thank the Liberals" will open readers' eyes to some of the battles that will help define our nation as we move forward.
Colmes boldly shows that as America progresses, it will become more liberaljust as it has done throughout historyand that this will enable us to continue to stand out as a beacon of freedom and democracy for the rest of the world.
This is a book for those who are new to the world of liberalism as well as those who just don't know what it is.
It is a historic view of the movement, outside of Dem or Rep labels,
I can't say it's a heavy read or full of terribly new ideas, I can however say that is is a solid read and a good way to grain a better over all understanding of the topic.
With the word "liberal" becoming almost a curse term in our current environment this is much needed.
I read this book. I don't have cable but this guy is on Fox News, I don't like to talk about politics, Alan Colmes was a liberal political commentator for the Fox News Channel, Fromto, Colmes was the co host of Hannity Colmes, a political debate show on Fox News Channel.
Colmes also ran the Liberaland blog and contributed to AOL News, Colmes was married to Dr, Jocelyn Elise Crowley, a professor of public policy at Rutgers University, .
