En definitiva esperaba algo más, Equal Affections has the feel of a Jonathan Franzen novel, the preappocolyptic family, the invented life styles, the dying parent, the precise cultural detail it should matter a lot that the obvious pov character is gay, but in the end it doesn't.
In the end, he, the son and younger sibling, seems to most normal, most likeable, and possibly the most clueless character in the book, The main character, the mother, whom we are supposed to like, seems to me a kind of a wife from hell, I would sympathize with her husband if only he were the kind of person one could sympathize with.
Mostly, he isn't. He allows his wife to bully him from day one to day none and his only resistance is to retreat into a late life affair, We're supposed to like the mother character, but I suspect most of us would be just as pleased not to have to live with her, Everyone in this book picks on one another in some way or another except for Danny, the gay son, In the end, after the mother's death, he is the one who brings everyone together, and I guess that's the point of the book, that the people we love are not perfect, and that is better to love them than to try to fix them.
Four, yes, David Leavitt is such a fine writer he can actually make something like this work,
Quite possibly my favourite book of the year so far! Very wellwritten novel about a family, I will read more of his books, I think this is my favorite Leavitt bookit's funny, sweet, realistic, and extremely engaging, I was pleasantly surprised by Equal Affections, having had no expectations at all: I was unfamiliar with the author, picked theyear old book off a sale table somewhere, and the cover graphics and text stirred only mild interest.
But I quickly found it extremely well written, with characters that become more interesting as the story unfolds, It has to be Louise's story, she the wife and mother living unfulfilled, fighting her cancer and trying to reconcile with her unfaithful husband, lesbian daughter, and gaymarried son.
All the characters are drawn in depth, however they all get "equal" treatment, living and breathing as equally important parts of the family, Danny the son at times seems the protagonist we see him grow from sensitive, malleable teenager to confident lawyer, but unsure of his relationships, His sister the singersongwriter is talented, marginally successful to her cult audiences, but equally troubled in her feelings toward her parents, If anyone gets less than equal treatment in the book, it is Louise's husband Nat, the nerdy conservative professor stalled in his career, his marriage, his life,
Leavitt does a great job describing the little details in life, the minor intimacies, unspoken jealousies, the power struggles within relationships of husbandwife, brothersister, parentchild, and even husbandgay husband.
And in spite of all the exposition, we realize at the end that we can never fully know another person, as much as we might feel we should, And that's not necessarily a bad thing, it's just the truth we are complicated souls, This is a sloppy novel without much of a focus until aboutpages in, and even then it still remains partially sloppy for the lastpages, Leavitt has some decent novels, This isn't one of them, A story of a liberal family living in the ultraconservative Regan era America, this politically and psychologically intriguing book addresses many themes both timeless and still current through interesting characters.
Equal Affections tells the story of the funny, loving, and tragic Cooper family, Louise, the indomitable matriarch, has had cancer for twenty years, Her son Danny, a lawyer, lives in a New Jersey suburb with his lover Walter, who is slowly growing obsessed with online sex her daughter April is a lesbian activist and folk singer, who knows how to perform a doityourself artificial insemination using basic kitchen utensils.
As Louise battles the slow withdrawal of her husband and the ravages of her disease, and as the entire Cooper family struggles to come to terms with her illness, David Leavitt reveals the profound depth and compassion of his narrative command.
In front of the eyes of the reader, David Leavitt paints a blurry family portrait, The blank canvas slowly fills with people first they are represented by mere outlines then, slowly, they acquire sharp details, both beautiful and ugly, Just as in real life and in a human mind the novel jumps from one person to another from a fantasy to a memory from past to present, The tone is bittersweet, yet not sentimental the metaphors novel and engaging, In front of the reader slowly emerge people entangled in complex relationships people haunted and influenced by their past, their memories and their desires, The brighter the picture gets, the more cracks in it appear, But the overall feeling we are left with is not in the least depressive if anything, then it is civil, vibrant, sincere and in the long run hopeful, People and life in general, Leavitt seems to be suggesting, are far from being perfect, but when there's love, there's always hope, Più interessante che coinvolgente.
Detto questo, classifico "Eguali amori" un bel passo indietro rispetto ad altri romanzi brevi, come "Il voltapagine" o "Mentre l'Inghilterra dorme", Good, but not as good as other books by Leavitt the scenes of an ordinary life are nicely observed, the characters are overall neatly drawn, But there are a few stray plotlines the whole aside with Walter and his internet chatting habits seems to just have been cobbled as a setup for a future redemption scene, but it adds to nothing more than an aside, albeit a truthfully captured one.
It's in the small gestures and everyday emotions that the book finds itself like the scenes of hospital life and the various ways we cope with grief but overall it doesn't come together as a the powerful book it wants to be.
The coda looking at the last meaningful event in Louise's life seems to shoot for a universal truth sharing your pain will set you free, it seems to be but it packs no real punch.
Romanzo carino che però, con i temi trattati, mi sarei aspettata più profondo e devastante, More family drama from David Leavitt, I never tire of his writing, Un libro maturo nella narrazione e nella storia, Un piccolo gioiello di un grande autore The first novellength book I read of Leavitt, Not as satisfying as his short stories or novellas, A lot of the same themes, but they take up more time here and are meandering, You feel like some chapters are repeating earlier ones, not building on them, A family chronicle, and a portrait of a matriarch who, at the beginning of the book, has been diagnosed with cancer, Leavitts characters are deftly drawn, grounded
in history, and alive, too, Some parts lagged, around the/mark, but by the end of the book the separate threads needled together, and I could see what he was doing,.stars.
