Le Bailliage etait un tribunal compose de juges rendant la justice dans l'etendue d'un ressort soumis a un bailli. Le bailli etait un homme d'epee dans le principe; il demeura tel jus qu'au dernier siecle; mais le veritable bailli, l'homme puis sant fut le lieutenant - general du bailli, magistrat de robe longue soumis nominativement au bailli d'epee mais en realite maitre absolu au judiciaire dans toute la circonscription du bailliage.
