is a very well written book about the tenants in an apartment house on the Upper East Side of Manhattan everyone is middle to uppermiddle class.
The story covers the personal lives of several tenants and their personal problems deeply, but mainly focuses on one family with ayear old boy the Fays.
A mentally unstable writer Maud Harewood and her husband move into the apartment underneath the Fays, and Maud harasses the Fays constantly about the noise.
The Fays adjust their lifestyle trying to suit Maud, but it doesn't help she still calls incessantly, The Fays become miserable and Maud begins a campaign of lies against them, As Maud becomes increasingly mentally ill, Begner captures Maud's inner thoughts so well,

Ultimately, there's a great calamity and a crisis ensues, no spoilers

The characters are welldeveloped and the book is interesting from start to finish, A step back in time tos NYC when housewives were the norm while only husbands went to work, The picturesque description of the apartments and faceted depictions of the characters immerses you in the very insulated world of uptown apartment life, As a frequent New York visitor, I was easily able to picture a lovely Upper East Side building where only “the right kind” of people live.
The wealthy anonymous kind.

Those are precisely the type of characters in Begners tale whose lives are shattered when a famous and mentally unstable writer moves in.
Instead of increasing the catchet of the building, she maliciously pulls apart friends and neighbors by harassing one family and spreading rumors about them.
A tragic accident finally reveals the shocking reason for the womans hatred,

Begners writing cleverly creates characters with deceptively hard or fragile exteriors that also evoke sympathy and quite of pseudopsychological analysis, A book club of amateur shrinks would have a field day discussing the mental state of one character who spends the day obsessively beautifying herself for a husband who finds her revolting.
However, it also caused me to reflect on

the unhappy state of women who had no identity outside of the home and men who struggled through mental pressure in a society unsympathetic to any perceived male weaknesses during that time period.

Despite the time period and apparent wealth of all the characters, Begner fills them all with personality and humanity and vivid backstorieskeys to any great novel.
By the end of the first chapter, I did feel as if I were riding the operator controlled elevator and peeking into everyones apartment.

This is an easy read for a train ride into the City or any city, A regular reader will finish this in a few days, Some of the words have fallen out of use in theodd years since the book was written so you may need a dictionary.

Surprisingly, this book seems to have fallen into partial obscurity despite being a quintessential New York stories that makes you very curious about whats going on inside those stately NYC apartment buildings.
And such quirky characters could never be found in Boston or L, A. or St. Paul theyre “Just Off Fifth, ”
I loved this book!! Goes to show, kid in a building of new tenants seems to much to bear to a 'great' writer and the tangled web weaved amongst them all is too much for poor Robin! Black shinny leather, the paper quality is lovely.
