How many kinds of autonomy are utilized in bioethics? From where does it proceed? What is the philosophical-political justification? What relationship is maintained between health and sickness? How are they related with the theories of autonomy development in biology and cognitive sciences? Does the principle of respect for autonomy have limits? What role does it play when applied to the work of ethics committees? Are there other forms of governance and citizen participation? How is the knowledge of both the layperson and the expert related to the governance of science and technology? This collection offers some responses to those questions, starting with the results published in recent years by the multidisciplinary research group IAS-Research, from the University of the Basque Country. They highlight the social aspects, in contrast with the excessively individualistic conception of autonomy as unilateral independence. This 'autonomy with others' appears as an interdependent process, the sense of which emerges from participation over time. Combining a theoretical approach with some practical applications, this addresses the question which plays a central role in applied ethics and which will be utilized in the management of welfare organizations; research in humanities, social sciences, and health; and education in bioethics and practical philosophy.
