Good morning. Do NOT get stuck in the comments section of life today. Make, do, create the things. Let others tussle it out. Vamos!
Before he inspired the world with Hamilton and was catapulted to international fame, Lin-Manuel Miranda was inspiring his Twitter followers with words of encouragement at the beginning and end of each day. He wrote these original sayings, aphorisms, and poetry for himself as much as for others. But as Miranda's audience grew, these messages took on a life on their own. Now Miranda has gathered the best of his daily greetings into a beautiful collection illustrated by acclaimed artist (and fellow Twitter favorite) Jonny Sun.
Full of comfort and motivation, Gmorning, Gnight! is a touchstone for anyone who needs a quick lift.

I didn't realize how much I needed this book until I read it.
Lin-Manuel Miranda, the genius behind Hamilton and In the Heights, has a pretty prolific following on Twitter. Each day he provides a tweet of encouragement in the morning and one in the evening. Sometimes they're humorous, sometimes they're inspirational, and sometimes they just hit you right where you need them to.
Gmorning, Gnight! Little Pep Talks for Me & You is a compilation of those tweets of encouragement, accompanied by terrific illustrations from Jonny Sun. And as Miranda notes in the introduction:
I don't have a book of quotations
Or wisdom I pull from the shelf;
Most often the greetings I wish you
Are the greetings I wish for myself.
So if I write "relax," then I'm nervous,
Or if I write "cheer up," then I'm blue,
I'm writing what I wish somebody would say,
Then switching the pronoun to you.
I so enjoyed this book, and flew through it pretty quickly. I found myself smiling, nodding my head, even feeling a little emotional at times, because Miranda was saying things that really resonated for me. Sun's illustrations are cute without being too precious, literal at times while abstract at others.
Here's one set of pep talks I loved:
Good morning.
Courage.
Even when the panic's at the back of your throat, courage.
Let's go.
Good night.
Courage.
Even when fear is at the foot of your bed, courage.
Let's go.
This book will make such a great gift, and although I've read it cover to cover (in a matter of less than an hour), I'm thinking of using it as a book of daily affirmations. There are certainly days I can use a little extra encouragement!
I hope this makes you feel as good as it made me. Thanks, Lin-Manuel and Jonny!

I'm holding off on rating this because I listened to it on audio and didn't get to see any of Jonny's drawings, which I expect will be integral to the book. But just for the listening experience of Lin narrating this, his soothing voice, how short it was, how personalized the advice and kind words were in his lovely voice, I adored it. I listened to this in 45 minutes as I was lying in bed and playing Animal Crossing before going to sleep, and it made me smile and tear up and totally relax. I'm sure it'll be a ~4 stars once I get a copy of the book or can flip through it at a library or bookstore!

I've never experienced something as positive as this

Perfection. Lin-Manuel Miranda is maybe the most incredible human being on the planet.
A personal story about how one of Lin's tweets helped me, with a content warning for talk of suicide:
The news that Anthony Bourdain had taken his own life came when I was at my own emotional low-point. I was in a job that I had loved and fought for, but was working for a boss who was destroying my soul. Before long, it grew into the single worst depressive episode of my life. I often woke up at 2 in the morning filled with dread, thinking to myself, "I would rather die than get out of bed and go to work." I didn't have intent or a plan to end my life, but the fact that this thought was so consistently lodged in my brain was an incredibly difficult way to go through life.
And so it came to be that I was home alone one Friday, lying on the couch and scrolling through Twitter tributes when I realized that Anthony Bourdain and I shared the same birthday. And that's when I cracked.
This might seem like a bit of an odd trigger, but it immediately brought to mind a scene from one of my all-time favorite shows, The West Wing. In the second-season episode "Noel," a military pilot steals a plane and deliberately crashes into the side of a mountain; the character Josh realizes that he and the pilot shared the same birthday and that becomes one of several things that leads him toward a breakdown and into a session with a therapist who diagnoses him with PTSD. There's a moment near the end of the session when the therapist asks Josh, "Can you honestly tell me that when the pilot committed suicide...that you didn't wonder if you were suicidal too?"
Josh responds, "I didn't wonder that" with this unbelievably haunted look on his face. It's left relatively ambiguous, but I always took his response not as a denial but as a way of saying, "I didn't have to wonder because I knew it."
I'd been so depressed that remembering that one line -- I didn't wonder that -- hit me so fucking hard. It's probably the closest I've ever come to being legitimately suicidal. I didn't make an attempt, I didn't consider how I would do it or anything like that, but I started down this terrible spiral of thoughts like, "Maybe I really should just die. If Anthony Bourdain didn't see any hope that it would get better, why should I?" And none of my usual methods was helping me turn those thoughts off, so I just laid on the couch and cried, hopelessly, for hours.
That's the ugly frame of mind I was in when I came across Lin's tweet that read:
Gmorning.
YOU ARE SO LOVED AND WE LIKE HAVING YOU AROUND.
*ties one end of this sentence to your heart, the other end to everyone who loves you, even the ones you haven't heard from in a while*
*checks knots*
THERE. STAY PUT YOU.
That tweet stopped me cold. It stopped the spiraling almost immediately. It helped me remember how that scene from The West Wing ended -- not just the famous
Guy Falls in a Hole speech, but the moment that the therapist tells Josh: "Because we get better." It took two more months for me to quit my job and leave behind the most toxic boss in the world, but I bought myself a bracelet stamped with the phrase, "Because we get better" and I wear it every day. And I am getting better, a little bit each day.
I bought this book specifically because of that tweet, but it's filled with so many other, wonderful gems. Affirmations that you can overcome fear, that you can follow your dreams, but also that your life is meaningful. It's a really precious thing and I can't imagine anyone not finding something inspiring, helpful, or even life-saving among these pages. -
¡Me gustó mucho!
Gmorning. Hope springs eternal.
Gnight. Collection is infernal.
I’m going to sound like a big grumpus here, but I found neither motivation nor inspiration in these greetings, in fact they’re trite bordering on nonsensical. Honestly, I’d rather read Dr. Seuss, at least those rhyme.
An example…
Gmorning. Wear sensible shoes as you kick down doors.
Gnight, Take off your sensible shoes, put on your dancin’ shoes, you deserve it.
Let the power of that wash over you before you read this next one…
Gmorning. Dubious. But doing this.
Gnight. Full of doubt, but singin’ it out.
And on and on they go. If this is what passes for encouragement, then I’d rather sit in the dark contemplating my navel. The only explanation I have for why these Twitter messages were published as a book is that the Lin Manuel euphoria has reached some sort of fever-pitch, mass hysteria so that every utterance is treated as a Talmudic message and we’ve all become the villagers who can’t see that the Emperor is missing his knickers. -
Beautiful. I'm so grateful.

I'M WILLING TO WAIT FOR IT. -
"What if — instead of compulsively reaching for your phone — you could reach for a book? A kind of comfort object that could keep you company all day long.

I love Gmorning, Gnight!: Little Pep Talks for Me & You. Seriously, I truly love this book. It is a charmming book of wonderfully inspiring pep talks. I feel so good starting and ending my day reading
Lin-Manuel Miranda inspiring words, &
Jonny Sun's drawings make me smile.
Rather than boring you with my take on
Lin-Manuel Miranda inspiring words, &
Jonny Sun's charming book, let me share with you some of their work.
In closing let me say, BUY THIS BOOK! You will love how you feel when starting your day with these two.
I told you so ... -
This was lovely to read, I adore how Lin initially tweeted these just to be nice and cheer someone’s day and it’s gotten so bigger than that because of his well-deserved fame.
The illustrations were really cute and nice to see alongside the poetry.
I borrowed this from the library so I’m thinking of buying the actual book and re-reading this - a double page spread every day to hopefully keep me thinking throughout the day positive thoughts.
A sweet read. 3.5 stars. -
book #8 done for the contemporary-a-thon under the challenge of: read a contemporary in a non-traditional format. ✔
these were so cute and sweet and honestly warmed my smol anxious little heart -
This was an adorkable little read 🤓📚
Lin is such a ray of sunshine.
Jonny Sun's illustrations are very cute and add quirky little moments to Lin's original tweets.
This book is such a sweet idea and a nice way to start & end your day if you want to break this down and read the affirmations one at a time.
I've no doubt they'll brighten anyone's day - so many made my little cold dark heart smile.
Such a Lin'amon Roll 🤩 -
Reading this book was like receiving a warm hug from a loved one that you haven’t seen in a very long time. Like coming home and feeling instantly safer. Like looking up at the sky and knowing that no matter what happens, you will be okay.

This book had me at Lin Manuel Miranda. When I saw Gmorning, Gnight! I clicked, “borrow” as fast as I could. If you are not on Twitter then you may not be familiar with Lin Manuel Miranda’s encouraging tweets. The man behind Hamilton and all his other gifts he has given to us uses Twitter to write little words to his followers. One for Gmorning and one for Gnight. The words aren’t extravagant, they are simple, and just what people need to hear when they wake up and when they lay their heads down to go to sleep.
We do not deserve Lin Manuel Miranda. He understands emotions and his words truly make you feel his caring nature. I am one of his followers and I am not alone when I say, that I look forward to those words every morning and night.
This is the audiobook version and quite honestly, there are not enough words to describe how much I recommend this version. Lin Manuel Miranda narrates the book himself. I want to record clips of it and set it as my alarm ring so I just wake up to positive words. It is the perfect way to start and end the day. The only downside is that the book is only 45 minutes long. I never wanted it to end. This book obviously gets 5 out of 5 stars! -
"Gmorning, love.
Your best impulse, that selfless impulse, let
it take the wheel.
Let it drive you toward the person you
dreamed you'd be."

I got my daughter Lin-Manuel Miranda's book of daily affirmation/pep tweets. I guess that is a thing. They are sweet. I stil don't regret spending her future college money on Tickets to Broadway's Hamilton in July, 2016. I thought that would finally quench my daughter's interest in Hamilton, L-MM, etc., but I neglected to plan for what a crafty, creative, and charismatic little man in a rollneck, two-button sweater he is. Hamilton isn't a one-off. Miranda is going to be with us (all of us; my family, etc.) for a long, long, long time. That isn't a bad thing.
The book is basically a series of AM/PM tweets Miranda sent over the course of 100+ days in 2017, etc. (there are 200 pages, so I'm guessing it wasn't exactly 100 days and some rougher tweets were left on the editor's floor). They are encouraging, positive, funny, and like a lot of Lin-Manuel's art -- open and personal. They aren't perfect and some seem a bit uncooked, but overall, I liked the idea, effort, and execution. Plus, it bought me a bit of cred with my 16 year-old daughter. So, totally worth the modest price of admission.
Oh, and I almost forgot ... Jonny Sun's doodles were on every page and sometimes stole the whole damn show.
"Gnight, love.
That need to rest, that constructive impulse, let
it take the lead.
I hope you dream the best, coolist shit. Let's go."

Lin's narration = <3
Love his energy!
This lifted my mood and was very peaceful to me.
Would recommend. -
This book is a compilation of short pep talks for each morning and evening, with illustrations that really add to the text (like flying garbage trucks, for example). The texts are compiled from Miranda's Twitter greetings, and I think this is a really good choice, hence my five stars.
The mornings and evenings mirror each other; you can dip into the book at random, or just go through, gradually or like a book. You might also sometimes feel like putting some on Post-Its or other places of written/typed down notes, if you want. The saying were something Miranda wanted to say to himself, turned into you-posts and really, you do need sometimes to cheer yourself.
Here, you have a friend that always believes in you, and values you, and is your eternal BFF cheer-crowd. Some are quite funny, some are firm. They encourage you to do your best, to advance little by little (Kaizen-style), to do good to yourself/others, and generally praise/admire/treasure you. To this book, YOU always matter. So get it (in my opinion, hardcover if possible). 8) -

لین کلا استاد از کار و زندگی انداختنه. 🥲😂 -
Read this in less than an hour. Remembered some of them from Twitter, which was fun. Awesome stuff.

Gmorning, Gnight!: Little Pep Talks for Me & You is an adorable book of affirmations, that is equal parts inspirational and funny plus the gorgeous illustrations are an added treat to the eyes.
On the whole, this book is really very simple, just a few words accompanying the good morning and good night greetings, but those handful of words are totally spot on! One could open this up at any page and read it and be delighted/inspired/encouraged by them. I think this is a perfect coffee-table book and this one's secured a place in my living room! I'll be picking this up and going through random pages every now and again.

I don’t have a book of quotations
Or wisdom I pull from the shelf;
Most often the greetings I wish you
Are the greetings I wish for myself.
So if I write “relax,” then I’m nervous,
Or if I write, “cheer up,” then I’m blue.
I’m writing what I wish somebody would say,
Then switching the pronoun to you.
And after a few years of greetings,
They started to vary in tone;
And people said, “Lin, your gmornings and nights
Are the nicest things up in my phone.”
What's not to love about Lin-Manuel Miranda? This book is like getting a hug from him; at least, it's a little bit like that and that can be enough. It's a bit of niceness in times that aren't so nice. And they are even nicer with Sun's illustrations (the people at the bookstore were as excited about him as Miranda, so I'll have to check out his graphic novel,
Everyone's a Aliebn When Ur a Aliebn Too)
Did I read this cover to cover yet? No, but I do keep it on my nightstand and dip in and out of it on most days. I'm reading it slowly to make it last. It will probably stay there a while. -
Accept it for what it is— a collection of Twitter-ready inspirational sayings, aphorisms, and poems which convey the usual self-help niceties and advice (“Let’s make some new mistakes,” “This moment will pass,”” Face the day,” or “Dream big” for example.). Expecting much more from Miranda, I was underwhelmed.
-
The world needs more books like these! Rooted in honesty- these pep talks are extremely likely to further brighten any day. It’s definitely a book I’ll be grabbing off the shelf when I need a pick me up.
-
Lin-Manuel Miranda is a national treasure. He’s a precious Cinnamon (Linnamon) Roll who needs to be protected always and is one of the only reasons I use Twitter. Basically...I love him. He regularly does good morning and good night tweets. Little snippets of love and encouragement. You can hear his voice in them. They are delightful. This book is a collection of those tweets with illustrations. Perfect. I think it would also make a nice gift. (Hint hint-my copy was from the library. Just saying...) I have the audio version coming from the library too and can’t wait to hear Lin’s narration.

چقد عسل بود:")
Gmorning.
This feeling will pass.
This workload will pass.
These people will pass.
But look at you, with the gift of memory.
You can time travel to the good stuff just by closing your eyes & breathing.
Then come right back to now, eyes up for the good stuff ahead.
You magic thing.
Gnight.
This moment will pass.
This fatigue will pass.
Tonight will pass.
But look at you, with the gift of imagination.
You can teleport to where you're happiest just by closing your eyes and breathing.
Then come right back to now, check in with the present.
You magic thing, you. -

Too much like Dr. Seuss which is fine if you are reading Dr. Seuss but this isn't. -
12/25/19:
Got the audio for this because I'll never turn down the oportunity to have LMM's voice in my ear.
I also think this time of year I tend to reach for books that help me reset and reassess my priorities and question how I order my priorities.
It was fun to re-experience this book in a novel format and though I think this is the kind of book that should live in one's bedside table, it was also interesting to read it in one go.
11/25/18:
G’morning.
Eyes up. Hearts up. Minds sharp.
Compassion on full blast.
*sips coffee*
Okay, let’s go.
I’ve followed Lin’s G’morning and G’night tweets for a few years and I was one of those countless people who asked for a book, and low and behold here it is!
And it did not disappoint. I kept this book on my nightstand and read a couple pages every night before I went to bed, and I think it’s going to stay there indefinitely.
Lin’s writing is a constant wondrous surprise and even in this form it comes through just as meaningfully.
I’ve clutched this book to my chest and quietly wept before falling asleep with a smile on my face. -
Let me set the scene: I'm having what could be classified as "a rough time" meaning that nothing is serious is wrong, everyone is healthy and I have people who love me, but I'm still finding reasons to cry at the gym or in my car. I go to the mailbox on Tuesday because my husband tells me he ordered a surprise for me weeks ago and it's here. Open the mailbox; it's PEP TALKS FROM LIN-MANUEL MIRANDA. I started crying in the street because there is maybe nothing in the world that would have made me feel so good at that moment. I didn't even know this book existed.
So the book is perfect. If there is a person on this earth who doesn't need a morning or evening pep talk, good for you. The rest of us can enjoy these messages of love, motivation, and community. -
This is pretty much exactly what I needed right now. I'd tattoo bits of it on me any day, just to remember that I'm not alone and that life is worth it.
Thank you, Lin-Manuel.
