I feel like a "book traitor" when I admit that I came to this novel on the strength of the (to me) amazingly stylish and uncompromising film version made in 1972 starring a phenomenal Oliver Reed. This is one of those strange cases where a seemingly average and (to me) somewhat mundane book was turned into a great screenplay. I'd have to file this novel under "a disappointment." I highly recommend the film though.

Maybe crime novel just aren't my thing. There were certain times where insight in characters started to enhance the plot but these didn't seem to go very far and even the moments of excitement seemed to fizzle out, including the dramatic ending, but maybe this was the point reflecting the mundane moments of actual police work? Either way it was not a book I devoured and looked forward to the next chapter, but like I say maybe it's just not my genre.
