A Doctor in Little Lhasa: One Year in Dharamsala with the Tibetans in Exile Reviews
-
I really wanted this book to be better, because I'm going to volunteer in Dharamsala and wanted to know about it from the volunteer perspective. the author does have interesting things to say, not just about Tibetan culture but also the specific community in McLeod-Ganj and the experience of being a Western volunteer among them, but the majority of the text is descriptions of the various ailments his patients have, mostly TB. I wasn't that interested in descriptions of tumors leaking with pus, and most of the cases he never learned their outcome but included them anyway, while a ghostwriter would have shied him away from this. This is a good example of how not everyone can go do something for a year and turn it into a great book; either they don't get enough material or they don't have the literary ability to tell the difference.
