You’re on the South Georgia Islands, a remote, icy place, with nobody around for miles and miles—except several thousand penguin friends, that is. Stunning photographs by Yva Momatiuk and John Eastcott lead you into a mass of birds as they waddle across rock and sand, so clumsy on land, so graceful in the sea. Learn of the nesting habits, diet, family and social lives of these birds that always look dressed to impress. This fun book will also inspire readers to care about penguins’ threatened habitats.

Face to Face with Penguins Reviews

Yva and her husband, both photographers, travelled to South Georgia Island (not quite Antarctica, but they also included info about Antarctic penguins). Apparently quite a lot of king penguins inhabit SGI. Yva made the book personal by speaking directly to the reader at times, beginning with her and John's arrival at the Island. She shares facts about many different penguin species, but the star of this book are the wonderful photos she and her husband took of different penguins. Yva does mention climate change on one page. In the back matter, she includes more facts about penguins, a glossary, n index, and a bibliography which includes books, films, and websites. She also includes a note on her research and photos. The text of this book is bit more lively and appealing than Seymour Simon's
    Penguins.

This in a great informative book about penguins. It's easy to read and has clear information in each section. The pictures are gorgeous and definitely will grasp the interest of its readers. In my future classroom, I would start by asking them what they already know about penguins. Then, I would use this book to read to the students to further their understanding. This would be a gateway into an activity regarding penguins.

Purchased this to fill a hole in the collection. The photographs are, as usual for a Nat Geo publication, are gorgeous. The narrative is quite personal and fairly engaging. But one chapter switches to second person, which I personally don't care for. There are chapters tailored for the report writer and information about what the reader can do to learn more. A nice addition.

This is a great introduction to penguins, especially for kids. The pictures are gorgeous, and the information is a very broad overview.

This is an informational book on penguins. Can talk about different aspects of the penguins lives (their habitat, their diet, etc.) Great for students of all ages.
