the most are actually good once harnessed You know this book is for you if your baby's first year was a nightmare of no sleeping and constant wailing your child has energy than a power plant your newborn seemed very alert and aware of hisher surroundings other people think your child just needs a good spanking you've seen other people's small children sitting uietly listening to a story and thought to yourself What's wrong with those kids I guarantee you will find relief in this book and a better understanding of your child and how to make your home life a lot smoother Two thumbs way up I've found very few extremely helpful parenting books This one tops my short list The book is very easy for a frustrated tired and guilt ridden parent to read First it defines the phrase active alert child essentiallly a very sensitive perceptive boundlessly energetic strong willed child and distinguishes this personality type from those labelled hyperactive the key differences being a longer attention span and the ability to focus Next the book lists traits shared by active alert children At ageyears my son exhibited all but one of the listed traits so I knew this book was for me Then the book provides anecdotal case histories of other parents who struggled to live with an active alert child and offers guidanceThis book demonstrates thatactive alert children are BLESSED with energetic intense personalitiesthe active alert's behavior is not the result of bad parenting andyou don't have to cure your child of his active alertness I find those points extremely comfortingI found this book two and a half years ago Periodically I take it out and re read it If your child insists on wearing his socks pajamas and underwear inside out because he can't bear the sensation of a seam against his skin if she becomes frenzied when tired as opposed to calmly winding down if he was born wise then you should take a look at this book It helps I FINALLY got Living with your Active Alert Child and I have to say I read the whole thing until aboutam I am going to read it again AMAZING It described my son right down to the upper respiratoryear infections to his inability to block out stimuli to how he is at birthday parties to how when I'm stressed he takes on my stress and adds a little of his own It talks about how they love to perform how they need to be in control how they can't smoothly transition from one thing to another I felt like when I was a teenager and would read my horoscope and I would think Yup that is SO me yup that too uh huh Active Alert is my son's sign No doubt about it I feel so less alone and feel I can now learn TOOLS that I can use when I feel out of control Buy this book if you are reading reviews and are thinking you just might have an active alert on your hands this book is well worth the money This book saved my life when my daughter wasyears old It helped me to parent her the way she needed to be parented She fit pretty much all of the character traits Ms Budd lists And yet the author and psychologist doesn't label the children as difficult or any type of negative wordNow my daughter is nearlyyears old and she is a lovely lively passionate emotional energetic intense bright kind young lady Without this book I don't know how I would've survived my daughter's younger years It's now giving me tips for her teen years as well There are sections for teens and adults in the updated versionThank you so very much Linda Budd This is a book I read after a recommendation by my daughter a Pre school Daycare teacher It helped me understand a difficult child of my acuaintance I was able to be patientto accept and love him when his behavior was outrageous and would have been unacceptable Reading the book helped me see that this trait is likely genetic and probably explained one of his adult relative's actions that I had been judgmental about causing my impatience and avoidance I have been able to respond sympathetically and to enjoy being part of the family I wonder how many children live without help and so suffer a stigma or possible isolation because so any of us are ignorant of what is a disorder that can be lovingly addressed and guided toward change Great book My son's teacher recommended this book to me since she felt my son had some of the traits of an active alert child After reading this book I agree completely While my son doesn't have all the traits mentioned he has aboutof them which I believe is on the high end We have been struggling with how to work with him especially because he is very different from my other two children It's comforting to know that we are not alone and to have some frameworks to help think about his personality and his behavior One thing to keep in mind while reading this book is that active alert does not describe a child fully It just describes one aspect of his or her personality For example my son is also introverted but I know other active alert children who are much extrovertedThe issue that kept me from giving this book five is a lack of the groundbreaking strategies mentioned in the title There are some strategies and the book is very helpful in understanding a child with active alert traits but I wouldn't call the solutions groundbreaking At the end of the day this book comes across like an experienced person giving you some useful advice.
