A Sinister Establishment: A Regency Cozy Historical Murder Mystery (Beatrice Hyde-Clare Mysteries Book 6) Reviews

This was a fun book despite the gruesome crime. Laughed out loud. The Duke and Duchess are smart and witty and interesting characters that have an enviable relationship.

Still love this series, even with the slow burn (if you want to call their courtship a slow burn) between Beatrice and Kesgrave bringing them to their marriage finally! The mystery itself was a little weak, and I would have loved a bit of their usual

  • Jeunet Valérie

une excellente série policière historique avec une romance improbable qui tient le lecteur en haleine! Une lecture très agréable et assez addictive, ce qui explique que je nai pas eu la patience dattendre la traduction

I really enjoyed this story. The banter between the Duke and Bea was funny and entertaining, and the murder was gruesome and yet interesting. The Mayhews were appalling and funny. All together it is an extremely good read, and I look forward to the next book in this series, which I hope will not be too long in coming.

Lynn Messina is a master at mixing mystery, murder and comedy. Three of my favorite things. This has become one of my favorite books. The main characters are charming, intelligent, warm and funny. They are also fierce when they need to be. Not only is the mystery and murder clever, but it is absolutely hilarious. It is the written version of some of the best screwball comedies of the thirties and forties. The writing is reminiscent of James Thurber’s classic “My Life and Hard Times.” If you are looking for great characters, good plots and a great time, I strongly recommend the Beatrice Hyde Clair series. They are so much fun! Bravo!

Poor Bea, having spent two decades as a poor relation, living with her neurotic Aunt Vera, now finds it very difficult to feel comfortable as a duchess. After a rather abrupt wedding she finds herself wandering about the Dukes imposing town mansion, takes a wrong turn and ends up below stairs in the butlers bedroom where she overhears an altercation about a murder next door.Next door is occupied by a sycophantic banker and his wife. His cook, Alphonse, reputedly the finest chef in Europe, has been decapitated, and it has all been hushed up.Bea is at a loose end, so calls at the house to find out exactly what happened. Despite her being a Duchess her interference is not well received.I did not find the book nearly as entertaining as the others in the series. There are some sweet interludes between her and her new husband, and he comes to her aid with as much alacrity as usual but most of the rest of the book consists of scene of crime interviews conducted with the bankers staff.Nobody should be groping about under kitchen cabinets for cleavers and looking at severed heads on their honeymoon., Surely the Duke could have delegated estate business for a month or two and taken her on a wedding trip to somewhere delightful or exotic, where finding a corpse or two would have been palatable for the reader!I normally enjoy the ironic wit of the author but this book felt prolonged and wordy.

Spoilers ahead:Yay they finally got married and they’re still an adorable and hilarious couple! Their banter will always be one of my favorites. The case started out a bit boring but ended up being really interesting and surprising. However, the bank scene was pure gold.I hope the next book shows of Bea adapting to being a duchess and of her interactions in society.
