I loved the fact that Kate herself narrated this audiobookyou could feel the anguish in her voice during some of the stories This book is raw real honest and does not hold back Kudos to the author for surviving and overcoming

I'm not sure where to begin I know the author but knew very little of her story Very little And what a storyIn what I can best describe as a very conversational tone as if you're sitting across a table at your local coffee shop at 200 am Kate Russell has not so much described events as she has shared vignettes I am a visual thinker and reading this book was like watching scenes from a movie so vividly were the conversations and incidents detailed I too am in recovery and I related so much to what Kate had to say Having grown up in a household with a rageaholic father there were definitely uite a few cringe worthy passages here some of which even caused me to put the book down and go do something else for a bitDo not however take any of this to mean that the tales with which Kate regales us are all downers I laughed out loud so many times shaking my head and thinking yep I get it that I did not want the book to end Truly If you're recovering from anything you know what that's like Dark humor protects us from taking our %# too seriouslyThis is one of the enjoyable books about alcoholism I have read if only because the author writes with such humor and grace It was heartwarming for me personally because it appears her program is solid her perspective healthy and her outlook joyous Good for you Kate

I won't lie; this is a hard book to read There are moments when you want to reach into the narrative and positively shake one of the participants Can't you see what's happening your mind screams The payoff though is that the author survived We cheer for her throughout even during some bad decisions We go down the rabbit hole with her thankful that we'll all come back out

Kate Russell is such a great writer sometimes I had to put this book down The writing is so evocative I was drawn into her world and the part where she's a child is terrifying I was glad it holds the promise of recovery on the cover In the end it's an extraordinary testament to the courage of survivors It bears witness to the fact that we can all recover we all get a chance in adulthood to break the cycle and care for ourselves I recommend this book to anyone who's committed to building a good life despite being inadeuately parented anyone who's coming out of addiction and anyone who cares for someone recovering from abuse and addiction

The only way out is through and this book is a wonderful reminder of that lesson It is truly through shared experiences of pain that wisdom is acuired and the author truly makes us all the wise through her heartfelt vignettes of her harrowing upbringing at the hands of parents devoted to using than to nurturing She has survived and she shows me that I too can survive the storms of life and come through to the other side by my own personal choices that I am not destined by my past experiences and that courage is the key to manifesting a reality full of hope and wonder If you are ever in a place in your life where you wonder how you will ever get through this is the book for you

Literally could not put down Battling many of my own addictions thru life this book was a real eye opener This book showed never judge a book by its cover The amount of bravery and courage this took and to still have a positive outlook on life is amazing This book reassured me that my addiction to the holy spirit is so real and so real in many others lives Kudos to Kate you are an inspiration God bless
