interesting book about ministry in smaller church communities, Probably the best aspect of the book is the reminder not to compete with larger churches or have the mindset that we must become like
them in what we do or in what we are seeking to become.
This book is encouraging and well worth reading for those in small communities or in small churches.
Read once and pass along,
Helpful book for those thinking through the issues of small church pastorates, I appreciate that the authors addressed the various settings of small towns, Especially the concept of "Rurban" communities that are seeing growth as they transition from rural to being bedroom communities.
Churches in these settings will require being shepherded through a culture clash of rural and suburban members.
The beginning of the book is a good heartcheck for pastors to encourage them in the slow steady work of building relationships in small town communities.
The authors also remind us to not try and compete with larger churches adopting strategies on a smaller scale that will never work in the small town setting.
At times I felt the book had too much pragmatic approach to building a health church, finding a niche offering etc.
, rather than an emphasis on the ordinary means of grace and the simple faithfulness of true discipleship the leads to spiritually thriving communities of faith at any size.
One of the authors even consistently downplays the role of preaching in impacting the church over time over against life on life relationships.
His point about fellowship and creating time for developing relationships outside of the study are taken, but preaching from the Word of God is at the center of all truly healthy churches.
A helpful book for the smalltown and small church pastor, I'm reading it for a paper, so having to reflect more deeply on the content led to more appreciation than I had when I first read it a couple of years ago.
My only hesitation is that it feels some of the "success stories" emphasize the very metrics the authors encourage pastors not to measure their ministries with.
Also, Klassen's newer book, "Maximize!" picks up some of the best points from this earlier work.
Both are worth reading, but if you only read one, go with the newer one, One of my favorites and one I return to when I need to refocus my preach in rural ministry.
It is a pistol book for anyone considering a rural pastorate, These guys are both the real deal, Like sitting down with two seasoned pastor's and hearing their successes and failures, And a whole lot of helpful wisdom along the way, No Little Places takes advantage of two smalltownchurch strengths that city churches dream of nurturingintimacy and involvement.
The authors help city pastors successfully cross the urbanrural cultural barrier, .
