PREFACE
This book really started NVM's passion with the art of writing, Swallow Press in Denver, Colorado, first printed the book in, Professor Alan Swallow believe that these short stores abou the Philippine life were worth sharingwith American readers, The first to appreciate this slim volume of short stories was the Director of Humanities Division of the Rockefeller Foundation, Dr Charles Fahs.
He came to the Philippines and sought out NVM who was then editor of the Evening News Maagazine, InNVM was named the first Filipino fellow of the Humanities Division of the Rockefeller Foundation,
NVM did not try to earn a degree, He wanted instead to meet with writers and critics teaching in selected universities in the U, S. He started in Stanford University and met Wallace Stegner and Katherine Porter, His two classmates in Stanford, Ed Loomis University of Santa Barbara and Bob Williams of California State University, Hayward were later responsible in asking NVM to go to the U.
S. to teach.
When NVM came home in, he started to teach creative writing in University of Santo Tomas, Philippine Women's University, and University of the Philippines.

Ang sagot ni Gonzales ay "Sapagkat tayo'y nagsusulat sa Ingles, " Para sa kanya ang mga Pilipino o ang mga manunulat na Pilipino ay nagsusulat sana sa Tagalog o Filipino o sa alin mang wikang kanilang sinuso at kinalakihan.

Na iyon ang dahilan kung bakit ko sobrang nagustuhan ang akdang ito, Ang mga kuwento ay hango sa kanyang naging buhay sa Mindoro noong dekada ', Uso pa noon ang paghahawan o pagpapabrika na naging backdrop ng tatlo sa unang apat na kuwento rito: ang "Ang Tagapagbukas" na ang ibig sabihin ay ang taong naghawan ng gubat para pagtaniman at gawing tirahan.
Noong panahong iyon, pag nahawan mo ang gubat ay pagaari mo na ito at maaari ka pang magimbita ng iba mong kaibigan o kamaganak para manahan doon ang "Buhay at Kamatayan sa Isang Kaingin sa Mindoro" naman ay tungkol sa grupo ng kalalakihan na inupahan ng isang mayamang si Ka Pedro upang hawanin ang gubat kasama na ang pagputol sa isang malaking puno ng balete na pinaniniwalaang bahay ng engkanto at ang "Ang Pagpupunla" na tungkol sa magasawang magkakaingin sa bundok upang pagtaniman ng palay habang sa gilid ng dawag ay natutulog ang kanilang sanggol.

Maraming salamat kay Ed Maranan sa kanyang masinop at masining na pagkakasalin ng akda sa Filipino, Buhay na buhay ang mga tagpo at parang mga larawang khaki at puti na nakikita ko noon sa baul ng nasira kong lola.
Mga larawang gumagalaw. Tapos ang lenguwahe ay parang yong napapanood ko sa black and white na TV namin noong binatilyo pa ako sa Baguio.
Para sa akin, naisalin ni Maranan ang mga kuwento hindi lamang sa eksaktong equivalent ng mga salitang Ingles sa Filipino.
Iniangkop rin niya ang tamang lumang porma ng Filipino na ginagamit nang panahong's sa Pilipinas,
Salamat sa napakagandang akda, Sir Gonzales at Sir Maranan, Mabuhay po kayo! Patay na si Sir Gonzalez at ayoko namang mabuhay siya noon pangpero mananatili syang buhay sa mga mambabasa sa pamamagitan ng kanyang walang kamatayang mga kuwento.

He left for Manila, met Francisco Arcellana, and joined the Veronicans, He studied for two years at the National University and Manila Law College, but quit his college studies sometime in.
He joined the Graphic, working there until the outbreak of WWII, After the war and without a college degree, he was invited by the University of the Philippines UP, to teach English and the short story fromto.
He became the chairperson of the Second UP Writers Summer Workshop in Los Baños inand was twice chosen as the Workshop's writer in residence inand.
He received several Rockefeller grants which enabled him to take special studies in creative writing at Stanford University, the Kenyon School of English, and Columbia University, and to travel in Asia and Europe.
In, he went to the University of California in Santa Barbara as a visiting associate professor of English, and stayed there untilas a professor of English and Asian American literature at the University of Washington fromto, and in, artist in residence of the Djarassi Foundation in Woodside, California.
Gonzalez's published novels are the Winds of April ,A Season of Grace ,and The Bamboo Dancers ,his published short story collections are Seven Hills Away ,Children of the Ash Covered Loam and Other Stories ,Look Stranger, On This Island Now ,Selected Stories ,and Mindoro and Beyond: Twenty one Stories ,.
His most recent published works are Kalutang: A Filipino in the World an autobiographical essay,, and The Father and the Maid , a compilation of six lectures delivered under the sponsorship of the UP Creative Writing Center,, He finished his final draft
of a short novel called Kaingin Country and was working on a sheaf of poems, A Wander Through the Night of the World.
Also in preparation is the Mother the Provider , a collection of stories, Gonzalez received a special award in theCommonwealth Literary Contest for The Winds of April , the Philippine Republic Award of Merit for Literature in English in, the Republic Cultural Heritage in, the Jose Rizal Pro Patria Award in, and the Patnubay ng Sining at Kalinangan ward infrom the city government of Manila.
Eight of his short stories were included in Jose Garcia Villa's honor roll into, His short stories, “On the Ferry”and “Serenade” in, won third prize and first prize, respectively, in the Philippines Free Press literary contest.
His short stories, which won in the Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature, are: “Children of the Ash Covered Loam,” second prize in“Lupo and the River,” second prize in“On the Ferry,” third prize,and “Tomato Game,” first prize in.
