on City of Rats

great fantasy foryear olds, Full of interesting events and action, In each book, the three protagonists need to find one of the Deltora stones, Three are on the belt now, Onto the forth. I think the book was magnificent! A bit scary at some points but not as scary as the first time I read it, Clever twists and turns increased the tension, making it really exciting, I loved it. My son was just as keen about this one, but I didn't like it quite as much as the first, Which is to say it wasn't amaze balls, just really good! It wasn't quite as clever either, the characters got through mostly on luck and happenstance, which in hindsight was always just the right thing.

Bismillah. City of the Rats Deltora Quest, Emily Rodda
City of the Rats is the third book in the eightvolume Deltora Quest series written by Emily Rodda, It continues the trio's journey to find the seven missing gems of Deltora, braving dangers and guardians in each book,

I really wish I was enjoying these more than I actually am, it's especially sad because I know I would have adored these as a child.
A great littlehr audiobook listen while driving, Nice. i need to STOP writing my reviews so late, but i have thoughts on this one,

im so relieved that in my reread of my favourite childhood series, ive found that the book holds even more depth than i couldve fathomed at seven

reading it atis so so so enlightening and i actually get to read between the lines and see the real world themes reflected in the stories.
but especially this book.

this book touched on morality, humanity, and my personal favourite in the light of Recent Events: the complexity of the monarchy,

it shows multiple perspectives on the monarchy from different class groups and honestly, really, FUCK the monarchy !!!!! but this book says fuck your fucking of the monarchy! we will all be fucked if we dont save the stupid monarchy from themselves.
i appreciate the depiction of the monarchy as stupid, but also complex. but dumb.

oh god another thing i loved about the perspectives thing particularly was the character who took a neutral stance on it all, he helped all and he profited all ways, he enabled the evil and assisted the good, it didnt matter to him what the cause was all that mattered was that he helped himself, and can we really blame him for that in that society, you must fend for yourself,

it also talks about what IS good are the main characters actually good or do they just believe they are do the “evil” people believe what they are doing is good

and also the way corruption runs deep through the city and anyone who is in power is contributing to the shit system and cults and if i am to speak in magnus archives terms for a second, this book is SOOOO avatar of the corruption.

btw love jasmine shes my homegirl for life xx,stars. I liked it more than the first and second books of the series, Unlike the previous two books in the series, I felt like this book got more political, and strayed away from being a mostly adventure book, At first I didn't like this, but it proved crucial to some of the character arcs especially Jasmine's and I actually found it pretty pivotal to the motivations surrounding the quest as a whole.
This series tricks you at first into thinking it's going to be a runofthemill "beat the Evil Lord and everything will be well by collecting ", and then it surprises you.
In some really good ways,
The book isn't afraid of asking some pretty difficult questions, such as "is the Shadowlord really the source of ALL the evils right now Can He really be blamed for everything, or are there other factors we need to address Would restoring Deltora to its former glory REALLY be the BEST option, when before it had its own glaring issues"
Emily Rodda is an author not to be underestimated.
I hold her in very high esteem, and she's constantly proving me right,
My only issue with the book was the pacing, I feel like a little too much time was spent in Noradz, and not enough in the City of Rats, for which the book has its namesake, The climax felt a bit rushed, like in the last book,
Other than that, I truly do suggest this book, especially if you've already started the series obviously, being bookand all, This was always my least favourite in the series but Im so excited because from here on out I remember the books just getting better and better!! English Ebook

follows later.
دیدن آینده همیشه هم یک موهبت نیست. ادامه دارد The beginning starts off interesting with our intrepid adventurers being hunted by wolves, Or are they After they manage to escape from the trap laid out for them they run into a capitalist trader who is only known to the world as Tom.
Say what you want about Tom, but he seems to have a fondness for the adventurers and helps them out especially once Jasmine produces a significant number of gold coins by providing them with animals better than horses to speed them on their journey.
The only condition is that they do not turn down the right fork when they come to it, Which of course they do not listen to because that is the direction the City of Rats is located, This brings them to Noradzeer, an unusual city kept in pristine conditions, but whose inhabitants are also almost treated like slaves, They are at first welcomed coldly but this turns to absolute disgust and terror when Filli appears on Jasmine's shoulder, Put on trial, the leader of the Noradzeer tries to secure their fate of death, but this backfires with some clever thinking from Lief, However, with a little help from one of the inhabitants they manage to escape out a secret tunnel only to find out that this location is the responsible for providing the castle in Del with all the delicacies the people see going up to the palace.
They cannot dwell on this however as they must get to the City of Rats, Where they experience firsthand why it is called the city of rats because it is inhabited with giant rats if you had not guessed, They are attacked their first night and have to retreat to the great river in order to survive over night, Once the rats retreat back to the city they attempt to get into the city, retrieve the jewel, and continue on their way, Once inside the city however, Lief finds himself drawn to the center of the city as though by some force of will, Lo and behold it is a giant snake responsible, who has the Lapis Lazuli which allows the snake to see into the future, However, the snake gets overconfident and Jasmine manages to decapitate it when it attempts to eat Lief who then tumbles and has to be restored using the golden nectar.
When he places the jewel in the belt, he is shown a vision of what he will face next, the Shifting Sands, The real question though is whether our heroes will ever get this hero thing down or will they always have to resort on their luck to get them out of sticky situations Our heroes continue their journey on their quest to collect the next lost gem of the Belt of Deltora.

Along the way they meet Tom, a neutral, moneyhungry shopkeeper who will sell profitable goods to anyone for a price, a cult civilization who Lief, Barda, and Jasmine encounter oh by the way, they REALLY don't like rats, considering the name, RaKacharz means rat catcher.

These people traded their freedom for power to the Shadow Lord and they have to provide food to the Shadow Lord and his allies in Deltora.
They don't seem that upset about selling their freedom for immortality and seem subservient to the Shadow Lord, however, the Nine have kept their extended community in the dark of their everyday lives to blindly follow orders without question.

What I'm wondering is, how did the snake at the end have mental control over Leif I really wish that ability was explored further and explained, it was just there unless it was the beasts' natural ability to subconsciously project themselves mentally to their victims to exercise control, or perhaps it was the possibility that Reeah, somehow managed to actually use the lost gem, or the Opal's abilities to his own means, which I found interesting.

Overall I was feeling underwhelmed with this book, it didn't grab me as the other two did, maybe it was due to the plain conveniences to keep the plot moving but it would've been awesome to see more intrigue and adventure play out.

Not only that, every final foe that our heroes

face seems only to be defeated by pure luck up to now, it would be nice to see just ONE of their plans work out for once instead of running blindly into danger and just hoping it works out for the best.

Either way, I think young readers would love this and I'm still curious enough to keep reading on and finding out what happens next, SN: I remember loving this series when I was a kid but I don't remember if I actually finished it, I might have moved on to another series by the time the last book was published, So here goes my attempt at rereading the entire thing!

This one was one of my favorites when I was a kid and I have super vivid memories of it.
Thankfully, my memories held up pretty well! One of the things that I'm noticing now as an adult is how realistically the story introduces new characters, So on to Book, and I really start to wonder how Barda ever thought he could go on this quest alone, So far the ranking for most useful character goes as follows:

, Jasmine
. Lief
. Barda

Big man really needs to step up his game,

Having said that, my overall impression is that the writing actually got better in this book, though I can't exactly say how, Perhaps things felt less rushed plotwise, Though once again I would have liked to see a little more combat skill in major battles, That is still quite lacking, especially for a former palace guard like Barda,

One thing I like about this series is that each gem aids the companions in some way, The Topaz in particular, has saved them multiple times by clearing their minds, but even the Ruby has turned pink when danger was close is that a Tolkein homage to Sting turning blue With the individual gems being so powerful on their own, it makes you eager to see how they perform together.

Another enjoyable read, On to the next!

NB: reading this alongside the Deltora Book of Monsters which offers additional worldbuilding and backstory to many of the creatures and characters.
