a few authors have written about the Cheras and their history, This one is a well written novel based on the historical facts, Interesting, though some of the plots in it are quite guessable and some of the characters that appeared to be prominent are suddenly disappearing from the rest of the novel.
Enjoyed reading it, but my opinion is that it could have been better, After lost love, anyone you meet does not rekindle your spirits, Same is the case after reading Kalki's works, Legendary writers like him set a huge benchmark such that other works almost always looks mediocre, Hopefully time will heal this problem, Kannadasan is one of the lyricist that I like the most, His songs are evergreen. Accordingly his characters in this novel do not talk, They sing. It gives so much pleasure to read this novel, But I feel strong characterization amp drama is lacking in it,
To think of interreligion love and interreligion marriage during the Chera times and to think of a king Cheraman Perumal III who left everything for his love makes one turn the pages.
The king who forcefully took a kingdom in the beginning leaves it in the end because of his love towards a Muslim women.
This novel also narrates the social pressure the king faced because of his interreligion marriage, All of it was relevant in's and I believe that is the reason for the Sahitya Akademi Award, good A fine novel that engages your attention all the way through, super This is the first novel that I read completely and within very short period of time after myth exams are over.
My mom used to say I am reading this with more aggression than myth public exam held that time, Very interesting story line. Great book. Sakithya academy award. One of the rarest works on Cheras, That was what prompted me to read this book, When you read aboutpages, you will get to know what Kannadasan is very good at, Expressing love and lust through poems, This is a roller coaster historical novel encompassing love, rage, revenge, religion, conspiracies, stupidity and philosophy, In some places the events get finished even before you could notice, The rush in those spots were quite irritating, We cannot fathom whether it was a deliberate attempt to pour in all sorts of emotions into this book, But they have not worked more often, What I liked about this plot is that it never really tried to super glorify Kings like some other historical fictions did.
Just when you feel someone has nearly become invincible, right then kannadasan has brought the character to the ground again and again.
The flaws of humanity are revealed throughout the entire story, Overall, it was a memorable read, The title of the book is the most scintillating part of it, Get to know about the liberalist king cheraman ofthth century, is quite interesting, Though the book failed to deliver the insight of cheramans life, The outline itself gives an fascinating perspective of cheraman,
Heard many songs of kannadasan, His depth in the lyrics not in this story characters, is a disappointment, And also the authors conservative narratives make me uninterested while reading,
Sure the book is a page turner, the authors narrative gives us the urge to know about the king cheraman.
After reading this novel, readers should totally admit that legendary writer Kalki Krishnamurthy has set a style to which our brains are accustomed.
Anything that comes out of the syllabus looks monotonous and plain,
With Cheramaan Kaadhali, lyricist Kannadasan presents us a cocktail of emotions, Akbar married Jodha in lateth/th century, but here is this guy, Cheramaan Perumal III, he who had dared the social norms of theth centuryassumed.
Be it Cheramaan's forceful conquering of the throne or be it the relinquishing, Kannadasan presents it to us in his style,
The fuss that interreligion marriage creates remains the same, no matter how many centuries we have crossed, just started the hero of this book was buried at Salalah where I am living presently, . . a fantastic piece from Kavignar Kannadasan, . Cheraman perumalPadmavathiYugiyanaSavitha . a lovable characters .
AFTER READING WENT TO HIS TOMB AND PAID RESPECTS AT SALALAH,DHOFAR REGION,OMAN கணணதசனன பனனன வரகளல சரளம கரளமன கத, சரமனன மதமறற மனமளள கதல கத, . . A book which I was longing to read from my early age, but buried in my memories, came to life when my nephew, a student of Engineering, referred about it ! I happened to pass through HB Stall in Chennai and never failed to get the book.
Such a wonderful writing of Kavignar Kannadasan, People know about his poems, In this historical novel, his poetic writings add so much of flavor, The story is about the history of Cheraman, a King who reigned the land of Chera those days, The first two parts say how he manages to become the kind of the country, though married, falls in love with a Jewish lady whom he had to send back to her native country on the grounds of some superstitious beliefs! The Third part tells how he once again falls in love with a Muslim lady, under what circumstances he decides to marry her and also starts living with both the Jewish and the Muslim lady, against his own wishes to be loyal to his Country and people.
The writer brings out the feelings of the hero so nicely that Hero just lives in flesh in our memories, Simultaneously the author never fails to give us the proper historical details too! The tremendous reading experience filled my mind with love and peace ! CHERAMAN KAADHALI: THE STORY IS SET DURING LATETH CENTURY IN THE KINGDOM OF CHERA WHICH BEGINS WITH THE THEN KING CHERAMAN II WHO WANTS TO GIVE UP HIS KINGSHIP AND BECOME A VAISHNAVA SAINT.
ANSWERS TO THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS COULD BE THE ACTUAL PAGE TURNER IN THIS EPIC TALE OF LOVE WITH UNEXPECTED TWISTS OF FATE:
WHO WILL BECOME THE NEXT KING, IS IT THE LEGAL HEIR OF CHERAMAN II WHO EVERYONE BELIEVES TO BE OR IS SOMEONE SECRETLY PLOTTING TO CLAIM THE POWER
HOW A HERO BECOME A TRAITOR, TRAITOR BECOME A RULER AND WHY HE ABANDONS IT ALL, AND WHO IS IT ACTUALLY
CAN A PERSON HAVE MORE STRONGER EMOTIONS AND SHOW MORE FEELINGS TOWARDS HIS SECOND LOVE THAN THAT OF HIS FIRST
DOES A WOMAN WHO HAPPENS TO BE A QUEEN, WHO LOVES AND CARES FOR HER LEGALLY MARRIED HUSBAND WOULD GO TO AN EXTENT TO GIVE BOTH OF HIS HANDS TO OTHER TWO LOVE OF HIS LIFE AND AMONG THESE THREE WHO IS THE REAL KAADHALI
EACH CHARACTER AND THEIR INTENTIONS ARE BROUGHT OUT IN SUCH A WAY THAT IT MAKE US UNDERSTAND HOW HUMANS ARE CARRIED AWAY BY THE MATERIALISTIC DESIRES AND FALLS INTO EMOTIONAL TURMOIL.
ALTHOUGH WE LIKE CERTAIN CHARACTERS, AUTHOR MAKE US TO THINK BEFORE SUPPORTING THEM WHOLEHEARTEDLY BUT AT LAST WE ACTUALLY DO, HERE THE VERY CONCEPT OF "HOW WE HUMANS DOES NOT CARE FOR THE OTHER WHEN ALIVE BUT TO HIS/HER GRAVE WE CARRY FLOWERS AND BOUQUETS WITH TEARS AND MEMORIES" IS BROUGHT OUT VERY WELL.
. .
KAVIARASAR KANNADASAN WITH CINEMATIC DIALOGUES AND POETIC DESCRIPTION "KADHAL ILLADHA KALYANAMUM KALYANAM ILLADHA KADHALUM THOLVI YE" CARRIES THE WHOLE NOVEL WITH CONSTANT PACE BUT FOR LASTPAGES PICKING UP THE MOMENTUM.
I WOULD GIVEOUT OFSTARS FOR HAVING ALL THE ELEMENTS OF LOVE FOR KAADHALI BUT NOT A SINGLE SCENE OF WAR FOR CHERAMAN.
REQUEST YOU NOT TO READ IT IN PIRATED VERSION, . . One of the finest works of Kavignar Kannadasan, truly mesmerized by the way in which the facts and fiction were interwined to give a beautiful experience.
Poets are not the writers, they are magician, Who do tricks with the words,
Flow of the book is the great magic that he did with words, Still I felt not so impressive coz of sandiliyan amp kalki the way they use to tell historys are pretty much dramatical to read take the breath of the reader, whats next.
Makes the reader turn pages,
Quite religious storytelling makes me hate it, At the time my mind set was ugh!, Overall very lyrical to read and failed to impress me, In the end I realised poets are magicians not musicians, Details of the history Kerala and cherans was very neat and sweet coz of kanadasan tamil literature,

Characters were wonderfully depicted, But I expected wars with other kingdoms,
Simply Its about Sacrifice amp Love, and all the religions were treated equally, Kannadasan wrote in poetic way about Yugiyana, padmavathi is wonderful and simplicity of Cheraman is simply superb, A historical master piece. It is heart touching when come to know the Cheran king left the country for his love, Beautiful narration, loved it very much, Cheramaan Kaadhali The title itself reveals it is a story of a Chera king and his lovers, historical fiction penned by the poet "Kannadasan" a very popular and legend like figure in Tamil flim industry.
The story is about a ProtagonistChera king who was obsessed with the throne at the beginning, for that he goes on to the extent of even to kill the brother like kin an actual successor of kingdom and thereby achieving the dream of emperor, later sacrificing his same empire for his pure beloved ladies for the sake his ultimate commitment of love towards them.
In Tamil historical fiction genre was sowed and successfully grown by the great "Kalki" thanks to his "Ponniyin Selvan" and later on carried by the likes Sandilyan, Balakumaran and so on.
I too read both Kalkiall and Balakumaran worksUdayar which is about Cholas empire with Pandiyas as rivals, Though in "Parthiban Kanavu and Sivagamiyin sabatham" Kalki throws light into Pallavas, there is hardly we have even mentions about Cheras in Tamil novels.
In that sense "Kannadasan" decided to step into the fresh field of history,
Meanwhile author carved the historical pieces and excerpts into a poetic novel with his imagination, The novel is filled with the elements like love, spiritualism, nature and especially melancholywhich is predominant in most of the characters, Being a poet author's description of nature, love and customs are highlighting one,
Many may feel it lacks the trill and pacy characters spy, war sequences which makes the work as interesting one to read.
But I think that's where it stands out from others, The author's narration is not like straight flowing stream or falls, Its travels like a seamlessly floating boat in a sea, There is no strong characterization to any specific characters, All are equally weighed. It has spices of politics, religion, love, customs and natures as a mix,
To be precise it's a story which speaks more of a emotional side of the king than his intellectual which is unusual one in historical novels.
Thank you .
